I am curious as to why you all think an installer will *fix* the black structures?
I think it is as simple as the engine changed in 08 and the CA/LC remained the same as it ever was.
Here is Quietlys findings in 0 regarding dark structures, not sure if it applies ot 08 or not..
-
Yes, from what Ive observed the faces/sides of an object facing towards the bottom of the screen in the CA will be somewhat well lit in game while the faces/sides of an object facing towards the top of the CA will be in shadow. This is true in all light settings (that Ive noticed) except noon lighting, where the objects are generally fully lit on all sides.
I noticed the noon thing while taking screens of the trains. Its easier for screen capture purposes to set the game to noon light so you can see the detail in the object textures. On the other hand, if the detail is in the model and not the textures then the other light settings will show shadows on the object better. |

I dont think it has anything to do with how they are installed. I installed all my libraries the same way. When I use structures from the bridges library they look fine in the game, but tee markers all look black. Not sure why, but I think it is somehow tied into the lighting engine of the game. |

Hynos pix are very illuminating, if not all that illuminated ) but here are two pix that show the difference in rendering of 3D structures between 08 and 07. Heres the 08 view. |

And heres the same view of the same course as seen in 07. The 08 trees and textures look a little bright, but i can live with that. I wouldnt want to give up these strcutures for reflecting water. So for a course like this, theres really no contest between 07 and 08. 07 wins hands down, lol. |

Jimi. Does the level that you have your shader control set at make any difference. By looking at the water in your 08 screen shot, it appears you have the shader control set at high or very high. |

I had it set at default, but turning it off renders 3D structures totally visible. So that is the solution to our little problem. :)) |

Yep. Just as I was thinking, they gave us a shader option to improve the water, but it messed up how we see the structures. |

No prblm, with the shaders set to low the water reflects nicely and the structures still show. Thanks for the advice. |

Glad you checked that out Jimi. I was sitting here at work thinking if adjusting the shader controls would do anything to the black structures. I am away from my home computer that has the game installed, so I was unable to check it out myself. |

Ive spent a week working on the settings and I think youll find that the structures look great when you set the game options Shader Level off or on very low but when you do that the grass textures look terrible. Theyre either standing up perfectly straight or with that weird looking straight and off at an angle look. I havent found any settings where the structures look great at the same time as the grass textures do other than on the stock courses. They seem to have reduced the number of manual settings that are available on 08 compared to previous versions. I prefer the grass textures to look great and will have to live with the poor look of the structures. Ill just have to use less of them is all. |

Is this what you mean, Stef? Thin straight blades? I can live with that as long as my structures look right, lol. Ideally of course everything would work like its supposed to without us having to experiment to find the setting that works best with every particular custom course. |

Very good research about structures......i tried it: I played Saint-Martin-Des-Parcours.....with shaders level... set: LOW........(you can do in options....Graphics) Structures looking very good and water looking great.....i attached pic.
That is how i will play custom courses: a. Courses with a lot of buildings/objects Shader level: LOW
b. Courses with water and not much buildings/objects Shader level: Medium
c. Courses without water and not much buildings/objects Shader level: High
Note: you can easy switch your Shader level ingame, when you are playing a custom course.....go to: menu...options....only takes 5 seconds. |

Yes, exactly like that or if changing the grass options it will be the same but with the grass growing at a 45° angle which looks just as strange and the water textures dont look as good with the shader level turned off but all the structures look the way theyre supposed to and not all dark. |

Keeping the shader level at low seems to be the happy medium for me. Water, grass and all the stuctures look very nice for me.
Here is a svreen of what the water and grass looks like for me with my shader set on low. It is not evident in the picture, but the water does have very nice ripples to it.
