As far as I can tell, there is no way to control it, other than hitting a longer club from a longer distance. I NEVER leave an approach shot shorter than 120 yds if I can help it, unless I plan on a pitch shot. (You never get back spin with a pitch shot). from 120+ yds, its more a matter of the slope of the green than backspin.
