I am writing this so it may help others, I am now on Windows 11 & also run TW08 please read all this info first and I hope I have made it read correct and I have not confused you. I''m 77 years young and I tend get ahead of myself when writing. All my info came from a British company called Novatech which is the company that built my PC 6 years ago & they give life time support to their products so it was easy to obtain the info. Please make sure you have your Windows 10 License key before you do anything else. Windows 10 key works on Windows 11. If you & others are already using Windows 10 type in search at bottom right on window home screen, Windows PC health Check, if you don''t have Win 10 it here''s a link. To download to see if your machine will run Win 11. https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/how-to-use-the-pc-health-check-app-9c8abd9b-03ba-4e67-81ef-36f37caa7844 Correct at time of writing
With Windows PC Health check it will tell you if your machine will or won''t run Win 11 & the reasons why, many times its because Bios settings need to be changed (check your manual or check the Bios setting. The rest is down to the individual, if your machine will run Windows 11. The link below is for Window Creation tool https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows11. There are links on this page for the individual download of Windows 11 on the media you wish to have Windows software on suitable drive i.e. USB flash drive 8 GB or higher or writable DVD. Firstly any machine that is running Windows 10 can potentially run win 11 providing it fits a certain criteria, mine did bar 2 things, TCM which is (Trusted Computing) & Secure Boot Which both has to be Enabled which is in the BIOS !! When altered you save & exit. When you enable Secure Boot the machine you are using WILL or DOES not recognize the windows Will go round & round (mine was back to BIOS looking for windows!!) you are using as it uses a different format that window is installed on, So you have to disable to use that machine as it was (Back to Normal). Before you do anything consider this idea first, which I personally chose. If you are still wanting to upgrade to windows 11. Purchase a New small 2.5 Solid State hard drive (Very Cheapish £15 for 240 GB for Windows 11 to sit on) plus a caddie the caddie is so you can mount the hard drive to sit in a 3.5 hard drive bay in a PC (if needed). The reason for this suggestion is Windows 11 primarily uses the NTFS (New Technology File System) as its default file system for internal drives and operating system partitions, offering features like large file and volume support, advanced permissions, and security features. While NTFS is the default, Windows 11 also supports the newer Resilient File System (ReFS) for specific scenarios, especially in development environments, and can use FAT32 or exFAT for removable media If you don''t like Windows 11 you can swap the Hard Drives over & be back up & running using win 10 in a very short space of time, Not forgetting the bios has been re altered. Let me elaborate on Windows 11 it uses a different format for the hard drive it''s an encrypted format which is called Bit Locker (not normal) that CANNOT be formatted from the machine it is using and has to be formatted outside that PC !! That''s why I suggested a new hard drive. Plus when windows 11 is installed it creates a 48 digit code of which is stored in the users Microsoft account as you cannot overwrite Windows 11 it will only try to repair itself using the unique code as mentioned earlier Now that you have windows11 on your preferred media, you now have to enter the Bios. Take pictures of Bios so you can revert it if you do something wrong. Altering the BIOS is actually the simplest bit yes it''s daunting but is really easy to do. Going to Windows 11 has its down side, it''s time consumption if you use the hard drive already running Windows 10. if you go ahead and install Window 11 it will overwrite the windows but it''s still like a clean install, you will have to reinstall all of programs (just the same as using a New hard drive that were installed BUT please use compatibility trouble shooter when installing OLD programs when your machine has been upgraded to Windows 11, as some programs maybe incompatible. My rule is if I have not used it for ages I don''t bother installing it. THIS ALL SOUNDS COMPLICATED BUT IN TRUTH ITS VERY SIMPLE IT''S JUST TIME CONSUMING AS CLEAN INSTALLS ALWAYS ARE!! Widows 10 and Windows 11 are basically the same it''s only the layout of the task bar that look slightly different
PS fast boot is new info if a motherboard has the feature mentioned TCM & secure Boot & Fast boot. Fast boot & secure boot go hand in hand if you enable 1 you can enable all 3. My wife runs TW08 on her Windows 11 Laptop it boots from pushing the button to start it up takes 13 seconds to be up & fully running (FAST BOOT) My PC takes 15 seconds |
