I designed this for Links 2003 using the Arnold Palmer Course Designer. As I’m getting more proficient with the Course Architect, I was thinking of something to design after my Augusta Par 3 course. I can’t think of how I’d make the overhanging greens or arches. The cavern hole I think would be impossible in the CA unless there are advanced techniques better designers might use. Thanks for any help you can give.

Hello Tim, i am not a specialist in Course design, but we have a lot of course design tutorial videos, maybe you will find the answer here:

http://coursedownloads.com/tutorials/tutorials.asp?id=5

Here is another link:

http://coursedownloads.com/extras/category.asp?thepage=1&gameid=11&id=10

And here we have some other tutorials:

Or maybe one of the other experienced designers will know the answer.

It is not possible to have overhangs using the architect.

There is a bit of a cheat that can be possible using objects. I was doing some experimental courses a while ago and made a futuristic course played across floating platforms. The golfer played through a course that was almost exclusively in the air. I also had towers and objects that had roofs that the golfer could play under.

Using specially made objects, you can have a cavern with a 'roof' that you can play through to the other side as long as the 'roof' is higher than a golf ball can reach, but you can't stand or play on top of it. The roof has to be 'pass-through'. If the roof is set to solid, even if the ball comes to rest underneath it, when your golfer plays the next shot, he'll be on top of the structure.

It requires the use of the old library creator so you can set the floor of the object to a terrain surface texture which fools the game into thinking it's actual terrain, while setting the roof to pass through.

If you just wanted to use the native plot terrain for the ground then you could make a ceiling object using the same looking textures as the cavern wall and then make it pass-through and set the object on top of the cavern valley.

Here's a few screen captures from the 'Futura Fairways' course I was working on. The first shot here shows the golfer standing on a 'floating' platform tee deck. Off in the distance you can also see a 'green' also suspended above grade.

Here's a second shot showing a different floating 'green'. The course had a real Blade Runner vibe to it, which is probably not what you're going for, but this shows how things can be done.

If you wanted a whole green literally hanging over a cliff, it can be done but you would have to do all the contours of the green on the object itself, which would require a high poly count to look decent. (I went with simple flat greens as it fit the theme) Also, you couldn't have grass blades on the object surface.
