I decided it was time to model a real course next. But which one to do with so many choices?. My interest is in courses with the most elevation changes and contouring.
Crystal Downs is a top 100 course that no one has done yet for TW08. It is a private course near Lake Michigan. Notable about this one is the hilly terrain and extreme greens. There is not a lot of detailed info, but I found some pictures. They have done it in the 2K series using LiDAR data. It will be tough to do right, so maybe in the future.
I always wanted to do Ellerston in Australia. Talk about private. It only sees about 200 rounds a year I read. And no pictures aloud! The Google elevation data is not even close. Australia is doing LiDAR now starting along the coasts, but Ellerston is a long way inland. The only thing out there is one drone flyby video. Just cannot do this one justice until more is available.
I was ready to do Mountaintop in North Carolina. Some cool holes with pretty good elevations. But before I actually started, I thought I need to check out Canada, my neighbor just to the North. Maybe do this one later.
A couple of courses stood out in BC, Greywolf and Predator Ridge. Greywolf has this Cliffhanger hole that is my kind of hole. And a few other notable holes, but I think more than half the holes are more run-of-the-mill. Maybe get back to it some day.
And so Predator Ridge, the Ridge Course it is. Now that have I studied it in depth, it is just an amazing course. There really are 18 unique holes there. And the total elevation change is over 400 feet! Maybe my fantasy courses are not so crazy after all - LOL.
I am done with the basic course now, which is like half the work. Man, it is looking sweet! Always worried about getting too confident in getting through the elevation work without blowing it up, especially with so much work needed.

Certainly a very eye-catching setting. Should be a challenge to make, and to play.
I feel like having those hotels right behind the first tee would be intimidating. You'd feel like people were watching you tee off over your shoulder. |

The first hole at the Ridge Course begins across open open terrain that looks like a links style course. They changed the routing on hole 1 to allow for more houses. I liked the old hole with its higher elevation rise (about 50 feet) and more strategic options, so I modeled it the old way. Plus the new houses crowd in to the hole. You gotta smash your tee shot to get up the hill for a view of the green on your approach.

The look and feel of the course completely changes at hole 2. The hole is 100 foot downhill, through a canyon, and between tall trees. The fairway narrows to just a path at the end. Back off the gas petal here or you might be blocked out behind the rocks on the right or hill on the left. Fear of the rocks could send you down the undulating green which falls off left.

Number three heads back up hill, although it is hardly noticeable. The course feels vary narrow now with trees crowding in. Keep your driver in the bag or likely find the rough on this short hole. Second shot accuracy is key with green contours more severe in the back and a short shot falling off the front slope.

Thanks Pat! I hope showing all the holes is not too monopolizing. With only a few courses coming out now I thought you all might like a bit of a story.
Hole 4 is a dog leg right, with only fairway and bunkers visible from the tee. This one seems uphill but is both down and up with a hilly fairway. Near the hole you break out into the first views of Lake Okanagan and the surrounding hills. Too long is definitely trouble.

You might have worked up an appetite by now. Luckily the Outdoor Cafe is next to the fifth tee with the best views on the course. It is 100 feet down the hill on the longest par 3. This would be the signature hole on most courses, but there are many to choose from here (I am not sure which is called signature 5, 6, 9, 16?). A big rock formation behind the hole, rocks to the left, and a big fall off to the right leave no place to bail out except short on the fairway 10 foot above the hole.

It seems like everyone loves the 6th hole as their favorite. A fun ride past the rocks and 130 foot down from pro tee to green. The fairway is even farther down with the green a short shot up from there. This green is quite tricky with a huge fall off if you go too far. This one scared me as I ran the point count up really high, but was able to reduce it with careful optimizing.

We finally reach the first par 5, the 7th hole. And it is a long one at 560+ yards and uphill to boot, after the lofted tee shot that is. Tough to get there in two with the elevated green. There are two main tiers on the green so you need to be in the right place for a low score.

The 8th hole is a long 230 yard par 3 located at the lowest point on the course. It has great visibility from the tee, like most holes on the Ridge Course. The green is sloped from the back right toward the center where it gets tricky, plus falls off with bunkers left.

We now reach the short 500 yard par 5 ninth hole. The unique feature of this hole is the large rock formations jutting into the fairway. There are no bunkers but a lake to the right, which is only trouble if you have a wicked slice. The green has a ridge in the center sloping both forward and behind setting up a lot of uphill puts. Can you say eagle?

Time to head back up the hill 400 feet to the clubhouse. Luckily, most of it is driving the golf cart, with the tees perched up high on most holes. Number 10 is one of those with a really high tee box. A great view of the valley, bunkered fairway and green, and a forest of trees. Could not skimp on the planting here, lol.

The par 5 11th has the most rolling, rambling fairway on the course. There is nothing but trouble surrounding the elevated green. It would be wise to lay up well short of the hole. Are you going to be bold and go for it in two? Probably, haha.

Thanks rlslay, been a while since we saw a new magnificent course from you.
Hole 12 is a picturesque par 3 set in a little basin well below the Outdoor Cafe. Another rock formation to the right, and bunkers both left and behind force the player to hit the green. A lot of subtle breaks in this green, just like the previous greens at 10 and 11.

And now we find ourselves back at the Outdoor Cafe. It is a good thing too, as my stomach was growling. The 13th tee is next to the cafe, well above the long fairway to the par 5 hole. This one has a long narrow green which I would call bumpy. I had to show off the new tee markers in the screen shot.
