Should have the course(s) uploaded by middle of next week. In the meantime, I did one last thing for fun. I made a short video analysis of several holes on the course in a similar style to what are often seen on the tv broadcasts.

FYI: no that is not my voice, it's a pretty handy synthetic voice emulator.

Approaching the finish line on Torrey Pines North Course. Just have holes 4-6 left to go.

I had planned to use the same pano as the south, but that pano doesn't quite lineup the way I need it to for the north so I made a revised version for the north that is a little more raised and altered. While I was doing that, I improved the blue ocean colouring as well.

Here's a little tease from the north's 16th tee:

There's a net on either side of the driving range that is very visible from across much of the north course. I felt it was important to get the look right but couldn't find anything available so I made my own with an object/cls hybrid. The posts are objects from a library and the nets are cls objects.

The only downside is that the nets are not solid so if you hook your ball on the ninth (pictured below) you'll end up on the range (ie. out of bounds)

Just uploaded Torrey Pines North as well as a re-release of Torrey Pines South. Both feature Farmers Insurance Open tees and tournament structures and are meant to be played with tournament atmosphere.

The South was not changed drastically, but I felt there were enough small cosmetic changes to make it worth re-releasing it so it matches visually with the North course. Changes to the South include:

-new pano that matches with the North so both have the same pano.
(the original pano for the South couldn't be used for the North course)
-new rough textures
-improved fairway divots
-improved shrubbery effect out in the valleys
-new tennis court texture on #10
-improved details that match with the North along the South's first hole, including the spectator tent and starters shack between the South's #1 and the North's #10. The driving range net along the the North's #9 can now be seen off in the distance from the South, particularly when hitting into 18 green.

Generally speaking, the South course will play the same as before. It just looks a little more accurate and fits with the North better.

This version of the South course can coexist on your system with the other version. The system considers them as different courses. Since they play the same, though, you might be better off uninstalling the earlier version since this version is an upgrade visually.

Great update and wonderful new release.

Many thanks.

I'm current;y working my way through PGA National Champions Course, which hosts the Honda Classic each year. That event is 2+ weeks away and I'm hoping to have it done by tournament time. I've currently got half the course done in the last 10 days so I'm making good time.

I've got the last 2 holes done.

This course is much like the Torrey Pines releases as it's meant to be played as a tournemant course. The customized tourney structures with correct colouring and Honda badging add to the atmosphere (I feel that way, at least)

I'll be adding some ambient buzzing crowd noise around the 17th and 18th (and possible a few other holes with large stands) to emphasize the atmosphere.

A quick question about your improved wave01.dds file. Should it work automatically on all courses with oceans or does it have to be added to each individual course, presumably by adding/changing the cls file? I don't normally add CLS files as I'm not a fan of insects flying around, or a ton of old tees and divots on the tee boxes, and my particular hate, BLIMPS, but I'd make an exception to use these nice waves.

The waves are not part of the cls, although if you turn the cls off in the game options, the waves will disappear. The waves are controlled through the course ini file. It is located in the main install folder for a particular course, and has the same name as the course, such as Honolulu Shores Resort.ini

The code that controls it looks like this:

[Hole 1 Coastline]
Point0=6196, 0, 3170
Point1=6271, 0, 3274
Point2=6388, 0, 3383
Point3=6494, 0, 3553
Point4=6583, 0, 3742
Point5=6650, 0, 3851
Point6=6680, 0, 3963
Point7=6678, 0, 4074
Point8=6659, 0, 4158
Point9=6647, 0, 4265
Point10=6600, 0, 4359

You can only really do this with courses you have the architect file for, since you need to plot coordinates.

Also, they only appear over non-stock ocean textures. Or in the case of Torrey Pines, over nothing at all. The Torrey Pines waves are actually off the plot, as the entire ocean is all pano. There was no water texture used for the ocean. The edge of the land was the edge of the plot. Same goes for Atlantica.

As for your issues with the cls files, I wouldn't 'not use them' because you don't like a few things in them. It might be better to just remove the items you don't like so you can include the things you do. I like having flying birds, for example. I feel they add some much needed life to the sky.

As a designer, I feel you're missing out if you're not using at least some of the available cls items.

Obvioulsy, you can do what you want with your courses but when the cls is used well, it can give a course so much more life and character.

I don't really feel I'm missing out. Birds would probably be the only addition I'd make, as long as they weren't overdone, but most of the other stuff I could get from CLS files doesn't interest me, they just seem a bit gimmicky. I have used CLS files on a lot of my courses but they had very few extras in them. I prefer courses that look as natural as I can make them look, I don't use panos for the same reason.

It's been some time since my last update. I had hoped to have TPC Craig Ranch finished and released by the time this year's AT&T Byron Nelson took place, but as that is just over a week away and I have 2 holes done, it's safe to say that won't be happening. It's funny, for Torrey Pines South and North as well as PGA National, I had about a month of lead time for each and finished them all pretty much on time.

I started TPC Craig Ranch 2 months before the tourney and yet I'm not close to being done. This course has a number of somewhat uniques structures surrounding it and on it so I took several weeks just to make an object library. Additionally, it has a stream that runs right through the middle that makes topographical work difficult.

I'll get it done sooner or later... in the meantime, here's what the approach to #2 looks like. I felt it was important to include the 4 highway overpasses directly behind the green. The traffic is clearly visible during the tv broadcasts from last years event. (and yes all the traffic is moving, of course)

Great job, Quietly. It looks very amazing. I can imagine the time it takes to build a new course with such attention to detail . Take your time and the result will be as spectacular as the previous ones.

Sometimes they come together quickly and neatly and sometimes it seems to take forever.

I did Wilshire in less than a month. Southern Hills I started in December. Guess it comes down to time and motivation...

The structure making process dragged this project out for sure. On the bright side, among the useful things to come of it is a handful of modern north american family homes, the type often found around golf courses.

Any designers in need of such structures will be in luck for future projects.

Quietly, your attention to detail is just the most amazing I have seen. I love all those houses. As I come back to the game, I remember that the structures we create seem to be darker than they were in older version of the game. I wonder if there is something we can do with the shading? Ah, so many things to check out, and I'm struggling to get back into this, but it's a good struggle, haha.

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right, so keep up the great work!

Those houses are properly lit, but they're in shadow so they look a little dull.

If objects are made using the standard library creator 06 (LC06), they are dark/pure black. If objects (like those houses) were made using the LC02, they can be set to proper lighting (sort of).

The LC06 has a different section for terrain textures and object textures. The 02 version put all textures into the same section. You then had to specify whether a particular texture was a terain texture, or one for structues. If you tell the LC that a texture attached to an object is actually a terrain texture, it will light properly in the game (although it often causes weird shadows to cross the face of buildings when there are trees nearby... because it thinks building faces are part of the ground)

The object is also no longer solid and golf calls will generally pass through it.

Anyways, I'm now through 6 holes, also known as 1/3 of the way through the course. The 6th is a strange one. It's a driveable par 4 so the course designer put a hilarious number of bunkers all over the place in a vain attempt to make the hole tougher. Most of those bunkers will never see a golf ball...
