Id say the main reason links courses are unpopular is that they lose their natural beauty when converted into TW form. The style of the graphics in TW tends to make even the most lovingly crafted links rendition appear barren and lifeless (just look at St Andrews) whereas parkland courses simply look easier on the eye in PC land.
