I just played a quick round at Hyno's 07 version of Merion and thought that it was a very accurate representation of what I was seeing on tv today. I know that Ron717 made a version from 08 and I have not got a chance to play it.
My question is: for those who have played both, which do you think is better and why?
BTW, I play intermediate and know for a fact some of the pins on Hyno's version would be unplayable on EXP VD. |

Bobby...I've played them both in the past week, while I hate saying one is better than the other, they both are good, I personnaly prefered the 08 version. |

Hyno's version is much more acurate. I did not find much accuracy in Ron717 version |

IMO it`s not the pin position that makes courses unplayable on Expert VD, it`s the elevations and textures used on the greens, a Classic example of this would be North Ryde v4, try it even On Int and see |

After watching the Open, I got the impression that Hyno knew Merion quite well. It was spot on for the most part. I used to design for JN6 and I know the frustration of trying to gather enough information to nail a course. It's not easy. Marion was crying for someone to update the course and Ron's course was a beauty. I'm thankful to have both on my HD. I play tru-swing advanced so I play either normal or dry and still have to work hard. I love the tru-swing, it's really what has kept me playing TW08. |

Havent been around for about 5 years. That 07 Course was the old Merion before the USGA went in and changed it up. #2 they shifted the fairway towards the road. #3 They added an insane tee. #9 They moved way back also. They have two different tee sets on #9, to the left and right of the 8th green. When I played the course we played it from the right side. In the US Open they played every day from the left and the 220+ tee. #17 They cleared out all the trees and they also added a new tee on #18. When it was re-done for 07 like 6 years ago, used the players yardage book from the 05 US Am. The org goal was to create a Philly style course using angles and geometry kind of like Augusta. This actually dates back to 2003. The org course was created using the course wizard and all the elevations were done by eye / memory. Later revised it to get it a little more accurate. aka the angles on #3 and the false bowls on #16 & 17. No idea if i put the ridge in the green on 13, havent played the course in a long time. #5 Green even back on the 04 course had the nasty insane slope in it. The reason why this course was created;; really liked Kens 04 Augusta and wanted to see if I could build an Augusta turned US Open kind of course. That is about it.. |

Hi Hyno
Hope your back designing...I like your Merion design...the 1st thing I noticed is the colors, the course just LOOKS nicer than others, and plays great...something I'v noticed from some of the newer designers is shots I'v hit hundreds if not thousonds of times now go farther or shorter in the air....dang odd...anywho hope you are back designing...now if we can get...Homeboy...Ken McHale...and Danut Golf...back designing would be super...anyway have a good day...have enjoyed your courses...and THANKS VERY MUCH for your time.

Hynos course is very nice. But as with 99% of 07 and early 08 courses it is unplayable with expert and V dry greens.
Ron 717 rushes courses and they should really not be called real except for the hole layouts. Elevation and planting are off.

Yea these old courses were all designed for dry green speeds. What I used to do with the textures was created playing conditions to create a game play effect. Dont remember the exact details, but like on Merion, the greens were speeded up and made to play firm. Oakmomt are the fastest green textures that I ever did. Just finally played a few holes on this old Merion course, besides not getting the water texture to render, it played nice. Just played Shinnecock also, really enjoyed going back an playing that one as well. |
