OK, so Ive recently acquired TW06 and TW08, and downloaded the very useful tools available on this website together with the tutorials on how to use them. I thought I'd have a crack at contructing a TW08 version of my home course. After a fair amount of reading I've made some progress and have at least arrived at something that loads up in TW08 and seems to function but I still have a long way to go.
My actual home course includes several aiming posts on blind holes and I need to create a structure that I can add to a library to include these. In reality these posts are just long cylindrical poles that are embedded in the fairway at appropriate points. I noted that you can add structures in obj format using the library creator and I just happened to have a program (Poser 5) that among many other things contains a set of mesh primitives - including a cylinder- and can export these as obj together with the associated mtl format. Unfortunately, although this file seems to add ok in the structure tab of library creator 06, when I come to create the library I get the error message - Unable to create an 3D object for C:\....\pole.obj.
I have examined the obj file and it seems syntactically correct to me so I'm a bit stuck since the error message is not very helpful. If someone could reply or PM me with an obj file that they know loads ok using LC06 then I could compare and contrast. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thankyou to all the contributors on this site. Without this site I certainly wouldn't have attempted this project. |

Have you had any help via PM or are you still needing some guidance? |

A couple things you can check: The texture you used to create the posts need to be loaded into the LC. It must be in dimensions of 2,..such as 256X256 or 256X128 and in .tga format, and put it in Library Creator, in the Bitmaps bin. Also, you need to load the thumbnail into the LC. To do this, take a screen-shot of the model, crop it to a perfect square and then re-size it to 128X128, and save it as (say your model name is Posts) Posts.obj.bmp and save it in LC in you Objects bin, along with your .obj file(same bin). When you're making the library, set the properties the same for the Textures (texture map-1 and your thumbnail-2) and Surface Structures (.obj file) Except you won't want to "check" "Show In Course Architect" your Texture Sheet. You will want to show the other 2 though. Also, in the Render Props tab, "click" the Center Texture-Clamp U and "Click" Structure. Save it as a temp file first, then create your library.
Hope this helps!

I just thought of something else. When you make the post in Poser, was your texture sheet you used in .tga format? It should be.
I've had the error message before. The exact actual name of the model needs to be used for both the .obj file and the .obj.bmp file.
Sometimes when I get the message, I'll open up the .obj.bmp file in a image eding program (I use Paint-Net and Irfan View) and see if it's actually a .bmp file and just re-save it to make sure it is.

Hi Robert,
Many thanks for all the ideas. There are several hints you have given that I had not complied with so I think I'll try the corrections one at a time and see which one does the trick. I'll post back when I've done them all !
Thanks again Chris |

Hi Robert
Well, I've tried virtually all the permutations and combinations I can but still get the same error message. When I 'add' the structure under the surface structure tab I get the thumbnail appear ok and the thumbnail also appears ok under the object texture tab. I am however confused about your advice about the structure properties. I don't seem to have a 'render props' tab, I don't have a 'show in course architect' check box. The dialogue box that appears when when I select edit for the structure only allows a change of the structure description. The dialogue box that appears when I select edit for the structure texture only allows a change to the description and collision properties. Am I missing something here ? Are we talking about the same library creator ?!?!
Incidently, there wasn't a 'Objects' folder in LC06 so I created one and put my files in it.
I'm starting to lose the will at the moment...
Chris

Sorry for the delay.
It's been a while since I have created a structure lib and when I did I always used 3ds max. If I'm correct, you need a special export tool you use in your 3D program in order for the LC to recognize the obj file.
I could be wrong here but I think that the only LC that truly works for compiling the libs is TW 02.
If you would like I can send you a copy of the export tool. I can't promise it will work with your program.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for coming back again, I think I'm sorted now. RobC was kind enough to send me an obj file and texture of a cylinder that he had created in 3D Max that we knew loaded ok (and it did in my library too). I could see from the obj file that I only needed small changes to my Poser created file to make it work so I'm a happy person now.
What a shame that the documentation provided with the Library Creator is so weak. It would save a lot of posts on this forum.
Many thanks again for your help.
