Hi, i am an old member returned and had a hand in making some courses that were just a graphics students fantasy designs, and were never released.

I think i can make a real course now after my training and have watched all the videos smilinggoats has to offer all over again, i understand the principles of how to manipulate terain mesh.

For one thing though, optimization will not be as much of a factor, as i can play stock maps in TW 08 with my setup @ 120FPS+ constant, and can even see a noticeable difference between TW 08s polygonal limitations vs. TW 12s.

I was wondering though if i can substitute higher resolution textures for fairwars, greens, short rough, and sand though? will it recognize them properly or will they be distorted once imported?

Would be great to have a fresh set of next-gen textures.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure regardless of system, optimization is a must. You will get those invisible textures on any machine.

you misunderstood alot of what i said, i never said i will not optimize the course, rather i will optimize less, in order to keep smooth ball-rolling and bouncing mechanics as real as possible.

But nobody answered the higher resolution texture question... i dont get my TW 06 in the mail until monday at the earliest. so i am sitting on my hands thinking on possibilities of what i could do with the current hardware limits and particularly hoping that the increase in texture res will counter the lack of normal or parallax mapping.

I`am by far no Expert on this , but it has already been stated by some Prolific course Arcihtects here that you have to consider the people with low end graphics cards, not all have big upgrades.
and would the high res textures look Gormless, like some of the Architects ones do.

I dont have to consider any such thing so long as i am creating something in my free time for my own benefit... i can easily make an optimized version with interim-saved backups for the community...

This is not a discussion of whether or not i should optimize it is a simple and clear question of: Can i import higher resolution textures into the library and use them functionally? As per the title of the topic.

I think we all optimize as little as possible. But the way the CA works, you tend to have to optimize much more than you expect.

I am not sure whether your idea of high-res textures will work. I don't have much experience with graphics and you are correct in saying I don't understand a lot of what you are saying. I will say that your best bet is to try it and see what happens and let us all know.

I agree with your other point. I design for myself first and then adapt to everyone else. Using a slightly different example, when I make a fictional course it usually will be unplayable on expert, very dry but when I make a real course I make it playable to all levels. It's all about what you want to do and who you are looking to please.

Yes i know, the point count gets buggy at even 200,001, but we will see just how well CA and a moden rig can handle realism in the coming months.

Also I just assumed someone tried to add a Hi-Res Texture Pack already, given the amount of work this forum has put in, even during the last year or so... not disappointed, more surprised but i guess when i recieve TW 06 in the post i will give it a shot and post my results. Thanks.

There are differing opinions on optimising. IMO if you dont optimise enough you will have greens full of creases, all of your textures will have seams aplenty where they meet other textures and missing textures all over the place

Very much looking forward to playing your "Uber courses" with hi res textures. As your post isn't asking for opinions on optimising, please feel free to disregard this post.

I am well aware of the triangulation methods used in CA and that there will be bottlenecks in the production pipeline. The real issue is can it be done.

I havent been in the CA for years and am simply asking questions related to upgrading the visual quality. I hope Hi-Res textures will tile correctly and not be missing, or distort, due to the engines limitations. But that is why i come to the Prolific hunting grounds in the first place.

The SmilingGoats tutorials pretty much lay it all out for you, however their views on 2000 points per land mass is skewed towards mass consumption, not for catering to next-gen development.

I witness for myself greens in TW08 that literally have two to three large triangualated polygons making the green have sharp inclined edges that are neither realistic nor desired, but that is EA making a game within specific minimum and recommended requirements for the timeframe... Sadly no occlusion methods are available as far as i know of, but alot of time has passed since 08, dont you think?

I have a high-level of study in graphics development including 3d character and prop modelling, animation and HDRI still-image photo-realistic imaging for use in games, film and television.

here is a small sample of work I am authorised to show: http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/raging-bull-revolver-3d-model/344530

notice the flaws in realism and you get a cookie ;;)

Im still waiting for TW06 in the post. Lost my original and after TW2012 came out got the hunkering to design a course with what ive learned since 08.

Also i will not be too close to design any thing worth sending over for a while as i still have to learn how to import a blueprint into CA, or whtever it is Terrain Helper does. I have an excellent blueprint of a great course i used to caddy at for years when i was a kid, and have many still images of each hole, but have no idea really how to import the blueprint into CA to make the course as close as some of you do with your courses.

I wonder if the Spam comment was directed at me, i am just keeping in my own topic, discussions related to my Original question, optimization, and a little background info about myself, such as that i can create 3d objects and uv map/unwrap them, and i have learned to paint much better since 08 so i can skin any custom objects too.

The hard part for me now is waiting for TW06 in the mail, and not knowing exactly what i will need to do to finally create a real, full course based on blueprint.

get the cloaking tool from here the utilities tool ships with o6 and on one occasion i installed 06 it omitted the CA , probably my fault.
i now steer well clear of any 06 libs.
Do 1 hole and lets have a look at it. GL.

Argon i admire your passion but I dont have the game yet... its still in shipping from amazon.

Honestly i would love to do that for you to settle whatever gripe you have against me but we will just have to wait at leas another day, i have no hopes of getting it as First Class Priority Mail as the seller i bought it from is a simple book shop.

Unless you can help me avoid installing TW06 altogether as some have suggested works, but I dont like messing with my registry.

[edit] game delivery transit a little late, stuck about an hour from my house, so probably tomorrow i will get it, in the evening.[edit].

Sorry I am not interested in paying for a membership to a forums. While i appreciate that forums like this exist, the donation and membership fee should be optional. I am currently unemployed and bills come first, though i will have plenty of time in-between finding a job to designa course ;).
