I have a question for designers out there, what is the best way to make a stream flat that runs downhill? There's an actual course I'd like to do realistically but the the stream winds and is like 1200 yards long with uneven elevation changes. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I can think of two ways.

The first way would be to do it in sections, you can make the divides in areas where you are less likely to see them, and screen them with bushes. This may sound finicky but would probably be easiest to work with.

The other way I can think of is to make the stream on a flat plot, drop it a few foot and flatten to minimum. Once you have it smoothed out to your satisfaction, make a hill encompassing the whole course. (;see pic) This may not be so easy to work with as sorting out any problems that arise would be a lot harder.

Thanks for the suggestion. Have you ever used the "flatten along contour" and if so did you get a good effect?

I have had quite good results just letting the water feature run downhill without flattening but only when it was a stream or river. I always flatten ponds/lakes/ocean. If you get any spots where the feature does not look right conceal it with some planting.

And I would do it in sections, as Neil suggested, and conceal the areas between sections with plants.
