Can too much smoothing cause greens to become too slick on very dry setting, playing on expert level?

Hi Jimbo, there is nothing wrong with your technique but i suspect that you have used a PGAX texture for your green texture.

The PGAX green textures are way faster that stock and will not tolerate side hill lies too well.

I have attached 2 pics from Golden Horseshoe illustrating (;typically) what i would do.

Short of redoing the greens you could try changing all the greens to a non-PGAX texture which may be slow enough to handle the gradient on the Very Dry setting or maybe well just have to play on Dry to Normal greens.

To answer the question, too much smoothing will inevitably destroy elevation work on greens by merging sloped areas with level areas until you are left with a continuous slope and eventually back to level ground again.

The biggest trick with smoothing is to get the green surface true and even without destroying the elevation work.

Many thanks for the advice Wizards. You are correct I used Sawgrass textures 2009 for the green.

Good points Wizard, if I may add that I don't think some realize how powerful the smoothing tool is. I smooth on minimum all the time, especially around greens..
