A few people have asked about my progress on any new projects so here's an update.
I'm still working on the fictional Punaluu Bay course that I started quite a while ago. It sat on the back burner for many, many months but I'm finally back at it. The course is all laid out and I've started many of the bayside holes, which will be the most dramatic and most complicated to create on the course.
One of the big hurdles was the water. I wanted nice looking water (ie reflective pond water) but making an 'ocean' out of the pond texture is very taxing on load times. I came up with the idea of using what appears to be a 'reef' of lava rocks. In actuality, the water along the shore is two ponds on land and the water further out is the ugly ocean texture, but it's far enough away from the holes that it is blended. The best of both worlds... And I think it looks pretty believable in-game too, as you can see from these shots of #8.
No idea when I'll get this course done, but I'll keep workin on it. |

Stunning. I can't wait to play Punaluu Bay. Any rough idea of a completion date? |

Thanks guys
There's a lot of work to be done, and based on past experience, a lot of problems still to solve. It's always a wrestling match with the point-count monster and I'm sure this course will be no different.
It could be weeks (maybe months) from any testing... I would say end of Feb at the earliest. |

Got a few more holes done. I wanted to make the short holes on this course really stand out so I ended up laying out five par 3's, four of which involve water. I think they will give the course a lot of its character.
Hole 7 uses the bay as a backdrop for the scenic panorama from the tee deck.
Hole 12 was originally inspired by a Pete Dye designed hole: #7 at Casa de Campo
Hole 17 is a small, tricky hole with water on three sides and a bunker guarding the right

Excellent work on that retaining wall, and may I assume you designed that retaining wall yourself? Sweet work! |

Just wanted to add my two cents in here.
People, this is what a true course designer does. Attention to detail. Attention to detail. I wanted to say that twice to get the point across. This is what separates the top designers from the rest of us. Personally, I consider this (among other things) to be one of my weaker points. But Quietly always manages to make his courses very enjoyable to play, but also extremely pleasing to look at.
I bow to your prowess in course designing.
Can't wait to see the finished product! |

Thanks guys
Yes I made the wall objects, it took a week and about 7 or 8 versions to finally settle on the finished product...
I think sometimes I obsess a little too much on the details, but with each new course I want to do something thats a notch above the last one. Of the three courses I've released for 08, Sparrows Nest was quite frankly below my standards but I released it anyways. The next one, Desert Wraith, was a massive step up in playability, detail and visual appeal. Finally, with Desert Pines I tried to focus on making better, more detailed water hazards with a more natural feel to them.
With this course, I wanted to really focus on establishing a sense of place (ie Hawaiian Islands) so I created a rich dark mountain range surrounding the course, tried to use volcanic rock and gravel in various ways throughout the course. I even spent some time creating the right colour of sand, maybe not a natural colour, but something that feels tropical.
Sometimes it's hard to be patient, but I've always found that the work turns out better when I spend the extra time to get it right. |
