Actually, I like the OS so far - lol. Some of you know of the trouble I have been experiencing using the CA with Windows 7. Courses will not compile at all. Well, I heard there is a Virtual PC and XP Mode for Windows 7. It is only available for the Professional, Ultimate, or Enterprise editions. I had Home Premium which does not qualify. So I looked into an upgrade from Home Premium to one of the accepted ones. Prices were around $170 - $200 but as I kept looking I found some from $139. Finally, I found what is called a "Windows Anytime Upgrade" (which is a component of Windows 7) and all you need to do is get a license key to unlock and install an upgrade in roughly 10 to 15 minutes. I found one such upgrade available for $84.99 and so I went for it. Changes my Home Premium to Professional. So them UPS'd me my license key in a nice little package and after roughly 1/2 hour I am upgraded and also have Virtual PC and XP Mode installed. So now to try it . . . .

So after installing the 06 game and CA I opened a project that has layout, terrain work, plantings, etc. I click to compile, and . . . . . the bar moves across . . . . . and it gets to the very end of the bar . . . . . and completes its mission, hitherto unforthcoming with Windows 7. This XP mode is started from within Windows 7 and runs as an open program, they call it a virtual PC. This is similar to the free program Sun has, Virtual Box. However, the XP Mode is completely user friendly, has access to all drive areas, etc.

So if you are looking to move to Windows 7 (I think a good idea) then make sure if you want to be able to use the Course Architect, get one of the editions which allows for the use of Virtual PC and XP mode.

Whew, that is the most sentences I have put together in quite some time. I think something sproinked in my back . . .

Am I reading this right in the price of roughly $223.00 + taxes etc? What were you running originally vista or xp and if vista what version? I too am looking at doing an upgrade to win 7 but in order to use the xp compatibility mode you have to use pro or ultimate the problem is im running vista home premium so I cannot just "upgrade" to pro as they dont offer that option, you have to be running vista pro to go to win 7 pro. The only alternative is ultimate which I can go to for $212.00. the issue with this is that you have to have vista still installed + add xp so basically you have not 1 but 3 os on your pc which seems a tad much. The only other option is to buy the full version of win 7 pro at about $300.00+ change and do a complete clean install. Both the money and the hassle are stopping from this right now.

When I was building machines for myself and family a few years back, I bought from these guys alot:

Ultimate Full Version $171.99

I personally reccommend a full install with any OS. Do your homework before you commit to an upgrade attempt, there are considerations.

Putterman - we are all learning the peculiarities of the new OS product offerings. If anyone can figure out why Microsoft came up with such a complex upgrade system for Windows 7 please enlighten the rest of the world - lol. I do know one thing - Windows 7 appears to be one of the best OS' Windows has had for quite some time. All the best of XP and Vista (what little Vista had to offer - lol). And for the first time I am running a 64 bit. Now I get the benefit of all 4 gigs of RAM.
