Downloaded Homeboy's tutorial for using Terrain Assist for international courses. When I unzip, I get mostly gobbledegook. Any ideas?

Using this process for international works good to a point. I'm trying to find
the NASA file for the area I'm interested in. The upper left placemark has these
Latitude 49 degrees, 55 minutes, 43.04 sec North, and Longitude 14 degrees, 9 minutes,
48.56 sec East.
So in the NASA Shuttle Radar Topography, SRTM 2.1, SRTM 3 for Eurasia, I'd download
this one? N49E144.hgt.zip?

Hope you have better luck than I did. I tried to do 2 European courses but couldn't get clear enough images to work from and have had to now do a USA course because the images are much clearer.

Kind of difficult to understand what you mean by some of what you say, but here is a brief refresher of the basics. Forgive me if this sound condescending. It is not meant to.

Always choose SRTM3 outside the U.S. Get your coordinates from Google Earth.

A quick run through of the very basics - refer to Homeboys tutorial for more - Go to the Seamless Data site (;http://seamless.usgs.gov/index.php)for anywhere in the world. And you need to change the file type to download to GeoTiff. It is always defaulted to ArcGrid. Download the file and unzip files to a specific location. Then use 3DEM to open and trim the file. 3DEM will only look for the particular file it needs out of all the unzipped files. Save the trimmed dem per Homeboys instructions. Then use the file with Terrain Assist.

I must admit I have not personally seen his tutorial, so forgive me if I offer a different instruction than he did. :)
