Ok, Id really like to figure out more about how to make textures. Ive done a couple sound libs, and some rocks textures, but thats it. Im pretty good with paint programs, but thats the easy part. The Course Achitect Appendix is pretty useless. I have a TON of questions and I do not know where to start. I want to do a couple of sea-side grass textures. It may not be possible, but I picture sparse clumps of weeds or grass blades in a sandy base.
If I get some response to this and following inquiries, I could write a tutorial.
Lets start here:
What version of the library creator should I use to make terrain and grass textures for TW08?
In the mean time Ill be working on some trial-and-error excercises.
More questions to come Im sure. Ultimately Id like to de-mystify all the numerical parameters in the properties dialogs. Im sure there are some folks out there who know what some of the more cryptic things mean... |

Use the Library Creator 06 to create textures.
I use Photoshop and I have a plugin for it (which unfortunately is not free) called ImageSynth. With that you can take any texture you can find online and create a very realistic looking (for the game anyway) seamless texture with it. For Paint Shop Pro, I have no idea.
Good luck. |

Second Question: Are the "Terrain Textures" and "Grass Effects" textures tabs unrelated? Or are the associated in some way? Thanks in advance. |

The grass effects are the blades and the terrain texture is the actual texture. |

I'm doing a course set on an island of the coast of the mythical(?) state of Floribama. Here's something I am working on called "Gulf Island Sandy Rough". |

Does the blade texture need to be tiled and is it a seperate file from the terrain? When i try to make a grass texture it looks flat in the game. And is the background transparent? |

Here is what I have figured out so far on this:
To make a grass texture with upright blades, you need a combination of a Terrain Texture and a Grass Effect Texture. The Terrain Texture forms the background, and the Grass Effect Texture is applied to the blades.
Use the Add button under the corresponding tab for Terrain Texture and Grass Effect Texture.
Then under Terrain Texture, right-click and edit a texture. Select one of the grass type options like Weed Rough or Rough. Then click on Grass Props.
Click either Standard Rough Template or Tall Weeds Template.
In the upper right of the Grass Effect Texture dialog box, there is a Blade Texture drop-down box with numbers. These numbers correspond to the bitmaps you added to Grass Effect Texture. Choose one.
There are lots of numerical parameters that can be adjusted. Some are more obvious (;Avg blade height), others are not. Im still experimenting.
Notes: Terrain Texture bitmaps should have some texture to them, and you should try to make them tile-able or such that they form a seamless pattern. Better paint programs usually have a command to do this.
Grass Effect Texture bitmaps should be solid or a simple gradient.
All texture bitmaps should be sized in pixel dimensions of powers of 2 up to 1024 x 1024. I use 256 x 256 for Grass Effect Texture and 1024 x 1024 for Terrain Texture. |
