I have given up course design because I can't find the time for it anymore. I don't do 3D stuff anymore either, because I lost the program in a crash and getting it reinstalled is quite a hassle. If anybody wants to give 3D design a go, I have a few pointers though. You have to remember that the basic 3D shape is nothing if it isn't dressed up right with the right textures. You can have the same basic structure, like a house or a bridge, but covering it with a brand new brick wall will give you entirely different look than if you use an old weathered texture. Here's a link to a website that has tons of cool textures that you can download for free: http://www.cgtextures.com/ Using Photoshop you can combine them in all sorts of ways. F.i. you take a bare brick wall texture and lift windows and doors that you like from one of the many textures you can find on that site and just paste them in. Once you get the hang of it, it becomes quite fun. Picking and creating textures for your structures is the most important key to a successful 3D design. Generally speaking the larger the texture image you use, the better and more detailed it will look in the game. I found the best size for large surfaces, like the wall of a house, to be 1024x1024 or 1024x2048 pixels. Larger images will add to the point count of your lib, but not catastrophically. Personally I think it's worth it, but that is of course a matter of personal taste. Hope this helps aspiring 3D wizards. |

Hi Jimi,
I'm looking at giving the 3D a go, and info like this is really helpful. Did you use gmax for most of your structures? This is the program that I am looking at using. Can use AutoCAD, but I don't think i'd be able to export the files in? Not sure on this one though
Thanks

I started out on gmax and the program works fine, but scripting your structures for TW is a bit of a hassle. You have to export your script by copying and pasting it virtually line by line if I remember correctly. That gets to be very errorprone on larger structures. You have to be careful not to make any mistakes. Never my strong point, lol. Maybe someone has come up with a better script editor by now, I don't know. |
