I am wondering if anyone has used loops of ambient sounds, like a generalized ambience of birds, insects, water, and/or wind. I'd like to try this, but I am curious what the limitations might be on the time duration of a loop might be. Are there other considerations in attempting this?

Also I am curious about what might be considered a reasonable or average library size, so that I can judge when to quit adding sounds.

I assembled a custom set of sounds for Caveland Valley so that aspect of the course would be somewhat unique, and because I was not really thrilled with the architect sounds. It was pretty easy after I figured out a few things.

I may do a short tutorial on sounds after I finish my next course. There are a few Q&A things that have come up on the forums that I'd like to consolodate. Anything subtle you have learned post it here, if you think it will help. I have a pretty good handle on the basics of placement, frequency, limiting the number of sounds on a hole.

I like the sound editor "Audacity". I think it's the Paint.net of audio: It's free, easy, and pretty darn powerful. http://sourceforge.net/projects/audacity/

Also if you are interested in this kind of thing, freesound.org is crazy chock full of cool sound clips. http://www.freesound.org/index.php

I did some for my Helawi Gorge course, one with jungle drums and a couple of rainforest ambience files I found.
I edited them using Audacity and used them as loops. I think they sounded fairly good.
