I finished a new tutorial last night as I laid out the Fontana Golf Club plot.
Unfortunately, it has been so long that I forget how to upload a tutorial. So here it is. Jeff, could you please move it to its proper location?
Thanks. Roger

Thanks Homeboy I will look over this for sure, and I'm still having trouble getting TA down. I know it's me that is messing it all up because of not knowing how to use Paint or other programs very well still. I hope to get it one day soon, so I can try real courses too like y'all do. Personally I think having to follow a real course design is much more challenging then having free will to go anywhere you want to in CA, but I'm still very green, so I don't know for sure. Think it would be, and I'm looking forward to this challenge no matter what, but doing it justice at the same time will be real tough like you accomplished designers do all the time. Nothing against fantasy course(some real like), and they aren't easy to make either, but having to following a real course & come up with the CA techniques to make certain things(example: bunkers) has gotta be hard, finding trees that work, right color textures, structures, and all the other things a real course might have or play like seems like it would take so much research & work to pull it off.......
Thanks again for your time bringing this tutorial to designers wanting to do real courses with TA too.

The tutorial has been added to the Utilities area under a new Tutorials section that I have created.

Since there is little other data available then this method will have to do ......... but ........ there is a tweak that I think is necessary. The main focus should be on correctly sizing and placing the course image on the DEM mesh. There is not (I repeat, not) an infinite number mesh points available so on a 90m grid the closest point could be 45m from where you think it is. I would modify the tutorial this way:
1) The initial coordinates you choose from Google are "notional". Follow the steps outlined by Homeboy and trim the DEM but don't worry about the image yet.
2) Open the 3DEM header file (the .hdr one) and note the "left_map_x =" through the "upper_map_y =" values. These are the Northing and Easting values expressed as meters (the Universal Transverse Mercator)
3) In Google set the options for "Show Lat/Long" to Universal Transverse Mercator and then the display at the bottom of the Google window will be in meters. Using the Placemark technique - drag the location based on the numbers at the bottom of the screen not the Key-in values. Match the locations from step 2) and it's as good as you are going to get. I don't believe Google's data is too precise but this should help refine the size and placement of the image.

Good stuff to know ... thanks Chet. Folks, in case you didn't know, Chet wrote the TA program, so we owe him a lot of thanks for helping designers do all the great real courses out there. |

Is there a way of doing this using Bing maps instead of Google? The reason I ask is that Carnoustie is very unclear on Google Earth.
Cheers

No, but you can overlay the Bing image on to the Google Earth image. I remember doing that when I did the Edgewood Tahoe because the Google Earth imagery didn't show the new renovations to the course.
Here is how you do an overlay:
