Been working real hard to learn all this designing stuff, and Im taking on learning TA this week too so I can make real golf courses for everyone to enjoy like I enjoy the courses you designers make. Here is my favorite hole Ive done so far in my designing career, and Im using this course to learn on so I can make real courses too. Its playing smooth, but this point count stuff always is freaking me out .....LOL
Its a short par 4 that can be driven off the tee for a chance for a hole-in-one, eagle, or can be played with a good 7W, SW, and short putt for birdie too. Im proud of this hole, and it is so fun making these courses. I thank my lucky stars I found this TW world, and the community has been very helpful with helping me understand designing or Id be very lost, more than I am right now, thats of sure...
Thanks Squirrely

Thanks alot Axe, and I still have much to learn with things. I haven't even messed with many many things yet, but I have come to realize, it's just going to take time & experience to get the skills needed to know all this stuff. Haven't even scratched the surface with all the stuff that's going on in CA, and when I seen that black grid thing for the first time, I was like " WOW, how darn cool !!!!!! "
I learned those bunkers methods from Homeboy's hole tutorial(Very good tutorials for those looking to design one day) Feel in love with the bunkers, and wanted to try them on the 1st course I tried. Very taxing the bunkers are, and if I knew what I knew now, I probably would have waited a bit before even aptemting them. Now it's become a labor of love, so it's fail or die with this puppy. At least the lessons will carry over so I can help the team out with bringing real courses to everyone one day too, but it would sting some for it not to play..... :(
Well, going to go try my hand with TA now, and it sure is a very neat program someone wrote.....

That's looking great so far squirrley. I am having problems with my course architect at the moment with compiling, but will post some shots of the course I've started as soon as I can. |

Thanks I kinda took on to hard of a design with being so new, but it's a labor of love now so it's hard to let go after putting so much work into it, but if you have any questions. I will do my best to answer them if I know the answer. I just started having problems again with having to many points on one texture. So I had to make all my bunker hills in bunkers the light rough instead of medium rough that surrounds the fairway too. Plus I'm going back and putting in a buffer zone around the the hole itself, and putting the heavy rough on the outside of that buffer to help with point court being on one texture too. Not sure what to do with the points that add to the hole buffer zone when you drop something after you optimize everything already, but I will do some test to see what happens. Guessing this is how some get floating trees because the ground changes when you optimize after planting things.
You can only have 65,000 point on one texture so you know this. When you go to compile & play your courses, you will see it without question. It looks like a plain solid color in spots on the plot. Just post screenshot too others can see exactly what you are talking about , and then they can help you better with things. I'm new so i have much to learn, but it just take time & experience to get the level of these other killer designer here.
Good luck Squirrely |

To help explain what I trying to talk about
If you notice on the picture below compared to the same hole screenshot in 1st post of thread I added a buffer zone in this screenshot below to help spread the point count across the plot. I have fairway, medium rough, deep rough now instead of just fairway to medium rough only Plus, I change those bunker hills texture to light rough from the medium rough I was using in the screenshot above too to help spread the point count texture number
New picture of hole below

Same hole from behind with new texture zone added now. Not sure what kind fo effect this will have with me dropping stuff in hole zone with me already optimizing, but I hope it doesnt mess things up. The ideal thing is to have all this done maybe before optimizing, but then comes the shapes being to close to each other causing creases to come into play. Boy, my head is starting spin again.....LOL
Picture from behind tees below (;Same hole has in beginign of post , but doesnt have new zone texture or new texture on bunker hills) These might not even be the final textures I used, but the zone concept will stay the same. |

Oh yeah, What operating system you using?
With Vista you have to compile in Virtual XP on Vista, it won't compile in Vista alone......

I do run Vista at home, but have another computer which runs XP, which I have TW06 installed on. I think looking at it that there is a problem with one of the library files, which I think is the one I've used for plantings.
I'll have a proper look on the weekend at it though. I have nine holes laid out with elevations etc all finished, and had started on the planting.
I'm sure I'll figure it out soon though. I have another two that I am working on also. |

You probably know this, but just in case you dont. I know you can use the CL tool to make a course project. After you make your course a course project in the CL tool you can have it fix any sticky libs that are hanging onto your course In CA.
There is info on this in the best advice thread here on the front page of THE COURSE SOURCE. Very good thread to read there.
Good luck Squirrely |

Hey Squirrely,
Thanks for the tip. I gave it a try and it got rid of the sticky libraries. Put it on the xp machine, but for some reason the architect program stops running when compiling. I think I may just give this course a miss and concenrate on the other ones I had started in the meantime.
I am doing a links style course and also a forest course, before looking at a real course. I have laid out all holes on both and got some elevation work done on each. I'll post pics (hopefully) in the next week or so.
Thanks
