Hi all,
I have been playing TW Golf for a few years now and discovered this site about 2 years ago. Have downloaded just about every course available in that time. I must say that I am absolutely amazed at some of the courses that you designers put out. I guess I would prefer to call you all "artists" rather than designers. Well, I have decided to dabble in course design myself and I know that this question has been asked many many times before, but can you direct me to what tutorials I should be reading to get started? I did purchase a copy of TW 2006 and thats as far as I've got. Just to let you know, I am extremely new to course design and would maybe just like to start out with one hole and see what happens from there. Any and all input would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance!!

Totally understand everything you just said with all that, and I just started trying designing myself.

I would recommend Nuttywoddy tutorials first because they give you all the killer info you need to know with course designing software & other cool designing tools to use. These guides was very key in pointing me in the right direction to go when I 1st started looking into designing.

Go to the top of this page & go to Utilities Tab, then Utilities & files for tiger Woods 08, next go to Course Installation tools link, and there you will find Nuttywooods tutorial,. There are all kind of killer tutorials made by Homeboy, JsJavis, Jimi, Smiling goats, and some other names I can't remember right now(bad with names)Oh yeah, great templates too that I haven't even gotten into yet, but reading & watching all these tutorials is worth every second if you want to try this out.
Takes a lot of time, but ya get what ya put into it, back ten fold.....

More experience people here can probably help you better because I don't know how to post links & things like this, so they can give you better directions & info with their knowledge of things,

Good luck

Oh yeah,
After you get all the needed software, and learning how they work. I did Smiling Goats tutorials 1st because they where videos(covered good info on the basic techniques needed to start actually making things) They are videos so this made it very easy to follow along while pressing pause while trying the techniques themselves. I didn't find Nuttywoody tutorial & guides yet so I did all the other tutorials I could find here. Then I discovered Homeboy's Hole making tutorial close to the end of things, and it felt like finding heaven gates when I found the directions to making a complete hole. Gave me some serious satisfaction after all the learning how to move files, use certain programs, reading, and watching stuff for a week or so it seems. Then you get to actually play that hole too using TW caddie to install the hole in TW 2008.

Just thought I'd share some of my 1st week experience while getting into this stuff, but it was one heck of a week, and I felt like I was studied for final exams pretty much.......

Have fun

I to am just starting out on some course designs for TW08, and definately recommend the tutorials at the top of the page.

I would also recommend having a look through all of the variuos posts under the course source section, to see what different designers are doing and the different ways in which to construct variuos parts of the course.

I have only just started with TW08, but have previously designed courses for PGA2000 by Sierra sports, which will give me a good idea on how things work in the architect program. There are many different ways to build things like bunkers etc, and you will find on this site, that everyone has a different way of doing things.

I haven't even done all that, but I sure will after reading your post.
Just started trying to use the search box, but I just haven't gotten many results when doing that it seems, maybe I'm doing something wrong like my keys words aren't good or something. I will start searching the forum archives manually to look for all kind of good info in threads/post, but I do look at the most recent threads, but I betting there are a bunch of threads or post in the past that are very very helpful for us wannabe designers.

I will start doing some deep archive hunting to see if I can learn better designing techniques.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to new course designers! I was also caught by the design bug - it's addictive and quite gratifying to start with an empty course plot and turn it into a playable hole (or eighteen).

As already mentioned, study and work through the tutorials. There's a wealth of experience and talent that have gone into them. I'm sure that the hosts wont mind me recommending TigerWoodsCommunity.net as another great site where a lot of designers hang out. The forum there is often buzzing with talk of latest designs, techniques and methods.

OK
I haven't branched out much to see what other sites are out there yet for TW, but when I did try one site. Something happened with my registration attempt, and it couldn't go through or something like that happen, but I can't remember what site it was now........Grrrrr
Well, off to see if I can play in strong winds on one tour I play, and I love all the different conditions on the tours to test our game...........

Maybe it was Tigerwoodscommunity? If so, you have to wait until your registration is approved.

I would be happy to do more tutorials if you think there are topics that might be helpful that I haven't covered.

Not to sure how to explain this so it's going to make trying to finding any info I can on this kinda hard or asking even putting the question in right form.
I have no clue how to mix your hole tutorial with the rest of the course. I understand the how to make a single hole from you hole turtorial, and I follow them tutorials as if they are the bible of designing now, but not sure what you designers do on the outsides of the holes. Like how do you smooth & optimize a hill that is 1/2 inside the hole buffer zone, and the other 1/2 is outside it. Do we just do all the optimising those parts after all the holes are made?
My designing a full course techniques have been struggling, and if not for all those other killer tutorials, I don't think I would have even gotten this far, but I was going to look into the forum archive section to see if I could find any conversations between you designers that might shed light on how you do these type of things because my techniques aren't to Sharpe right now with all that. I need better ways than what I've come up with because I failed with the last two course attempts.

Homeboy, you already spent so much time making those other tutorials I would hate to ask for you to make anymore, but if you could just steer us in the right direction, I'd be very thankful.......

Thanks
Squirrely
