I was wondering what the considerations are for textures when making the transition from fairway to green. On my first course I just kept it a simple fw->fringe->green, or rough->frings->green. I am thinking of doing fw->1st cut->fringe->green.

Also, on a green surrounded by rough, what is the best way to transtion?

I general, does it get to busy to use the extra transition textures?

Is this so subjective its not even worth asking? \:-?

Hey Nutty..This is really a question for Homeboy or those close to him...Ive always thought is was the deeper rough transitionining to shorter rough, then to intermediate, then to green. But in this picture of Oakmont,it seems to be deeper into medium, into slightly deeper around bunker,to int, then to fringe around green, then Green..

That looks really nice and flowing. The problem I find is that when you have so many shapes close together like that, you are prone to getting creases and tears as you optimize. For that reason, I often opt not to do a first cut or fringe on my courses.

Here's what I do... take it for what it's worth (not much I'm sure :))

Generally, I go Rough, 5ft First Cut, Fairway (usually a foot or 2), then 2ft fringe... or something similar to this. I use different strategies on par 3's or other holes where the fairway ends before the green.

Of course, I've used different strategies for different courses as well.
