This might go over like a lead balloon, but here goes my wish for this site.
I wish, we designers could have a page to make comments about other designers courses, so that only designers can see it and learn from it. I think good and or bad criticism about technical issues, would be better served in a designers corner.
Myself, I just dont feel right commenting on a course with comments like, your tee boxes werent flat or bunkers need work, etc: And since I cant help test every course, I usually keep my mouth shut. I dont know if anyone else feels the same way? I mean, I know my courses arent perfect, and I want to learn from my mistakes too. And I am not afraid to have good or bad comments said about my courses in public, but maybe we would get more feedback from other designers but they just dont want to make public some of their criticisms public.
I just think comments should be by the general public.
Maybe Im dreaming, and maybe its not possible, I know a lot of hard work goes on at this site, and would understand if it is not possible, or if it is just a bad idea.
I love this site, it is a fantastic site and if its not possible, that is fine with me. I agree with, if it aint broke, dont fix it.
Of course, I still want to be able to make comments.
Thanks for letting me speak.
Axe..

Well said axe...
I agree with you here, I dont know how practical it will be for the staff, but it would be a nice touch.
I would love to have some CONSTRUCTIVE criticism to help in future design. And left by the talented designers here, could do nothing but help.... Some great tips could come from that. And left in a section where only the designers could read and comment could take some of the sting out of some due criticism...Not being said to the whole world would enable the comments to be a little more to the point without having to worry about it seeming like nit picking....
I think I understand what you mean, sometimes you want to say something about a course, but on the same hand, dont want to come across as too critical to the public....
Am I on the right page here...?
Definitely looking forward to a Designers Corner

I think that's how it works out in the course source furum. I seemes to be mostly Q&A & discussion between designers. Which forum have you been using ;-?
It might be uncool to start a designer click here. Back when I was thinking about trying design, the Course Source forum really piqued my interest.
See my PM for something that might be what you are looking for... |

Hmmm. I was speaking of the Course Comments section for each course. I wasnt trying to be uncool, it was just an innocent idea.
Thank you |

I thought of this the other day, since my typing is terrible and sometimes say the wrong things. So many times I have to edit or delete what I write!
The designers should have access to remove the posts that are made on their courses. Also the person who leaves the post should be able to edit or delete their own post.
If this is done, than people can speak out a lot more.
The designer than gets feedback, if they feel it has gone over the line they can remove it, however they were still able to read the message.

no I did not mean to suggest you were being uncool! It's a good suggestion, some just may see the course source forum as the place for that. Start a topic about a course and see what happens. I don't know what personalities might show up, so be ready for whatever, hoefully it will be amicable! |

I agree to a certain extent with you Chris, sometimes I do want to edit my comments about a course.
Like this thread for instance, after actually thinking about it, and reading some replies, I really dont think my idea would work.
I think it works gr8 the way the course comments is setup.
I dont see the alternative working the way I was thinking.
Thank you and disregard this thread. lol |

Larry, I think your idea is excellent. I don't have the time to do a lot of beta testing for others, but I am happy to test courses for a good handful of designers out there. My feedback is pretty detailed and comes from a designer's standpoint ... and I bet that it would be useful for not only the designer, but others as well.
I won't name the course, but here is one that I did:
I tried out the course on vdry/breezy/diff pins.
Some general observations:
Framerates were good; no problems with lag. The one hole that I saw had a drop in fps was the 16th tee box -- 36 fps for me (about 10-25 fps less than the average), which was caused by all the weed rough right next to the box. I'm not sure how many testers you have -- just curious if someone with a lesser card might have an issue. Maybe you could move the weed rough further away from the tee.
As usual, you have a knack for plantings and great detail work. I really liked the streams and retaining walls throughout the course. There are a handful of holes on the course that have a lot of character and are quite enjoyable, like 6, 10, 13 and others. Quite a few of the other holes -- and this is not your fault at all -- aren't nearly as interesting. Just my thoughts.
I noticed that I generally could not see the tee markers while standing on the tee box. I usually place the markers maybe a yard forward so that the markers can be seen -- shows off the markers and gives you some bearing standing in the tee box.
Also, there are a lot of broken tees on the tee boxes (my cls is at medium). Sometimes it was a bit distracting. That can be fixed real easy in the cls folder -- I can do it if you'd like. I also didn't see too many flying birds considering how many bird sounds you have. If you want, you could swap out the cls folder from Liberty, which has fewer broken tees and plenty of flying birds.
Specific comments:
1. Could you please take a look at this spot on the first green? I had a few awkward rolls and I was wondering whether it was a crease or an intended break -- seemed a little bit like a mini trench behind the bunker. Maybe you could smooth it out a little.

That was the only weird thing that I found on your greens. Otherwise, nicely done. Some little tiers (not tears hehe) here and there and some sloping greens kept things interesting.
6. I really liked the freehand cartpaths. Not sure if everyone would typically notice that, but I did-- even before the retaining wall. Just a great hole with a lot of character and attention to detail. I sort of wish all the holes on the course were just like this.
8. I tried that front left diff pin a few times to decide whether it was fair. Quite a few times, with back spin, the ball would roll down the sloping edge right off the green -- but thankfully not into the water. I didn't get to try it with light rough and I'm wondering if it would keep going into the drink. Might want to move that pin in a bit.
9. I think this is the first time that the little creek shows up. I have to say that I looked at it quite a while trying to decide if the water was dropped. On other places on the course, the creek appears to be dropped more. Not sure if you want to do anything about it at this point. No worries.
10. I spent a while admiring the retaining wall, trying to decide if you placed each post. But then I realized it was part of the wall structure. Great structures and nice job with the wall.
14. I liked this hole a lot because it was the fairway with the most interesting undulations on the course. That left greenside bunker looks like it's dropped lower than the stream, which looks a bit funny. You might want to smooth out that bunker a bit more so that it is raised some more.
15. Really like the boomerang green.
Overall, another great job. The focus of this course seems to be about the character of the covered bridge and railroad tie retaining walls. Maybe I'm just being greedy, but I wish that those features were on every hole, rather than just a half dozen or so. I think I might have enjoyed your last course a bit more just because it had some really interesting elevation changes throughout the course. But this is still another fine performance.

Yes, and I was thinking that if we had a place, where if a designer wanted to, he could ask for any feedback he could get from other designers. I too am happy to test courses when I can, but cant always do it.
But lets use my last course as an example. Now that it has been released, maybe some other designers might play it for the fun of playing. But as they are playing it, they notice a few things that could be improved on.
Bam, they could go right to the designers corner and if that designer has asked for feedback, he could get some gr8 help. Of course if no other designers play my course, then I would just revert back to the testers feedback that I have. Which is one good reason for testing. But thats really the only time I get good feedback from other designers. Of course, we all would like to know about any flaws before we release, but thats not always possible, and I know it would help me out for the next one.

Ill let the cat out of the bag, IM playing with a Myspace or Facebook style designer page, that will allow architects to manage thier course comments along with editing the page layout. Right now is the start of race season so every free second I have right now is going into the car. But once its done Ill be back to work on finishing up the control panel for the staff. |
