OK fair warning, this is a first attempt. Technically, I did build a 9-hole course first as a learning excercise, but I did not take it to full detailed completion.
I have the .tcr, a list of libraries, one small custom library, splash, logo, flag all ready to go.
I have played probably 25 full rounds and many partial rounds checking playabilty and aesthetics. I think I have it as far as I can take it.
My main challenge was meeting the 65K point limitation with a highly complex terrain. I concede there may be a couple of playable areas, mainly fairways that appear to be a bit over-optimized.
I may need a bit of coaching on proper file transfer ettiquette.
I have a degree in art and I am a drafter by trade and used to criticism and corrections, so dont hold back, I truly am looking to improve my skills and my output. Many thanks to everyone here, creators of libraries, and oracles of knowledge. This has been the most fun creative project I have done in a long time. It sure beats weekend home repair... |

Wanted to PM this to you, but you can't be found for some reason, so here goes: This is quite impressive for a first effort. Your terrain work looks pretty believable and the planting is excellent. Most areas I found looked well smoothed. I couldn't find any real instances of overoptimizing, except maybe on the little pond that is behind one of the greens. (I forgot which one.) The water isn't flat there, but as you hardly see it. it is not a main issue. I had to move up close to notice. (Mind you, unflat water is one of my pet peeves.) I do think some of your fairways could do with a lit less slope and I'd be careful blocking your tee shots with trees. You must always be able to play a par 4 as a par 4, without being forced to a detour because you can't get past some trees. Some of your bunkers could do with a bit more definition also, but that is easy to learn. All in all, like I said, quite impressive. You must have some experience with similar programs, I believe. (I just saw in your first post that you have.) |

I tried it out ... very dry/breezy/diff pins. FPS very good throughout ... 40-60 fps and load time between holes was about 9 seconds, which is also very good.
I really admire your willingness to yank on the elevation tools. Some very good terrain work on the surrounding hills/valleys and rock cliffs. I don't think I saw any flat areas on any of the surrounding terrain (except the water) ... very nice. I think I would have liked to see a little more realism in the elevations of the fairways/greens ... this leans a bit more toward "fantasy" than "fictional" ... not that there is anything wrong with that. Just not really my cup of tea.
I'll give you some themes to think about based on my notes:
1. Flat tee boxes -- sloped tee boxes really affect shots for expert players, so you should take a look at that. Telltale signs are whether one tee marker is sunken or floating, but the other is not. Several holes were sloping or had some anomalies from elevating over a small area ... like the lump at the front left of the 1st tee.
2. Tee markers -- make sure you remember to do them throughout. 4, 7, 16 and others were missing markers.
3. Overhead - Check to make sure all the fairway is visible in the overhead. This matters for expert players who can't hit the E key for a flyover. See 8 for example.
4. Cartpaths -- make sure they don't have trees/bushes growing out of them or go over unnatural terrain. I'll give you a mulligan on this one just because of the extensive elevation work here, which as I said is very impressive.
5. Consistent bunkering -- some had lips, some didn't -- like the fairway bunkers on 12 and others. Pick a method and stick to it. It looked like you might have dropped the bunkers using the one shape method ... I think 2 shape looks much more natural. Take a look at some tuts out there.
6. Play-test on very dry -- several greens and even fairways were very tough with rollbacks on very dry. My drive on 3, for example, was in the middle of the landing area, but rolled back off the fairway into the deep stuff leaving me with a 230 yard blind shot. Back right diff pin on 15 had some tough rollback too -- off the green and over the side of the hill.
Overall, an impressive first effort with the elevation work. Keep it up. |

Thanks very much for the time, effort, and honesty HB. I have enough invested on this project to make it worth the follow through on your recommendations. And thank you for the encouraging words, too. |
