Ive been playing TW06-08 for a few years now, obviously, and have only recently been trying to design my own courses. I guess my question is when you other designers start with a fresh new plot of land, where do you start first? I've seen screenshots of Homeboys courses (downloaded a few of his courses) and just got done looking at the screenshots for Le Ferme...gorgeous pictures. Where do you guys get the vision to create these courses? I get about 3 holes into my courses and realize they wont look anything like the ones I see on here LOL. Any ponters from the professionals?

Thanks

Well I do real recreations so that starts with loads of research and getting digital elevation models, overhead imagery, and as many photos as possible. Jimi does fictional designs. Purely creative work on his part. Maybe he can give you some tips on inspiration. But in that regards each artist is unique. Homeboy does some of each. As far as the look of the finished product, that comes from skill with the tools to be able to execute whatever design it is you are doing. That comes from learning the tool and lots of practice. A good place to start learning is to look at the tutorials various skilled designers have created. I know Jimi and Homeboy both have contributed tutorials here. Also Smiling Goats has done numerous ones. You can find them in the tutorials section here on the web site. Best of luck

Hey ivamajorwood, don't feel like your alone, I feel the same way and I have made a course or 2, lol

As far as where to start on the plot, that is a very good question and one I always ask myself when I start.
Trouble is, I never have the answer, so I'm glad you asked.

I don't know if there is any set place or places to start, I know, you don't want your course to come within 200yds of the outer parimeter.

Read all the tutorials you can, and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Heck, I just went back to a tutorial on making water, that I read at least 2 yrs ago, and I learned something that I missed the first few times I read it.. I guess some things make more sense, the more you work with the CA.

And I would advise always, always have your courses tested, Golfcart 03 is and excellent tester.

Good luck, and you can pm me anytime and if I don't know, I can probly steer you in the right direction.

I do ask myself that alot...where to put the first hole. I usually put the first hole right in the middle of the plot, and then work from there. I've read/watched all the tutorials on this site and seen some great information. One of my favorites was Jimis flat water tutorial. I saved the picture he put on here a while back and everytime I make a pond, I go right to that tutorial. I have saved all of the smiling goats tutorials as well...great ideas on those. Maybe I just get impatient LOL I will keep pushing along hoping to one day have some beautiful screenshots that I see on here so often! Keep up the great work guys!!

I tend to start a course with an idea. Maybe a links course, or the more forested course I am working on now. Once Ive started laying out the first hole or two, I start thinking about what kind of atmosphere I want for the course. I guess Im lucky because I can do my own structures, which make up a large part of the feel of the course, whether its a European course or an American course or whatever. In this case I had decided on the name of the course before I started, so I needed a farm building at the heart of the course, preferably as a clubhouse. So I went on the web and checked for pictures oof old, large farm buildings until I found one that I liked. Then I made a structure that looked sort of like it and planted it on the course.
Once that is done, inspiration for the rest of the course comes more or less automatically because the theme and the atmosphere have been set.
At this stage, more often than not Ill start putting in streams and ponds and stuff so I can work around those areas and dont have to start messing with my holes to get the water to look right. I hate water thats not flat or that is higher than the surrounding area. Without a dyke protecting it, that is.
A nice trick to use is to start out not with a flat plot, but with a plot that has small undulations or whatever the CA calls it. This gives you a gently sloping, natural looking terrain to work with. Then draw a buffer area around the area where you want your hole to be and drop it (;any texture you like, but a bright, contrasting colour works best - I use the Architect library for it.) Now draw an area within your buffer that more or less follows where you want your fairway to go. Drop that, enlarge by 1 and flatten to minimum. Now delete your flattend shape and optimize your buffer shape at the 3rd click. This will cause some rippling in your texture, but that is juist what you want. For now you start to smooth your buffer shape (;enlarge or diminish by 5 or 6 to prevent spiking at the egde of the shape) at the lowest setting until your satisfied that your area looks nice and smooth and all sharp angles are gone. It should look as smooth as a babys bottom. To best see your smoothing work, you should set modeling clay under options in the CA. Those awkward, sharp ripples should look like soft undulations now. Now optimize your buffer shape at the 3rd click once more and you have a nice, gently undulating piece of fairway. If you want to raise certain areas, you can use the two-shape metod for that. Be careful not to elevate too much. The view in the CA tends to grossly understate what you see in the game.
