I would be very interested in knowing how many of you see this abnormality in 08 custom courses. In some 08 customs the taller rough grass textures instead of standing erect seem to be laying almost horizontaly with the terrain, a similar look as you would have in real life after a severe rain or hail storm that would beat the grass to almost a flat position. I have been told by several people that this issue occurs primarily with users of Nvidia cards and that ATI card users do not see this. Any comments would be greatly appreciated, because in the past, I was always been under the impression that this was an issue pertaining to certain textures, primarily stock textures in custom designs. I see this slanted grass in maybe 25 or 30 percent of the 08 custom courses. I do not see this in any of the 07 custom designs or in any 07 or 08 Stock courses.

This has been an issue for some time, I believe back in the 07 game as well. I have always thought that it must be a Nvidia card issue as I have never noticed such a thing with my ATI card.

I think the best thing for you to do would put up a screen shot of what you are talking about. I would hit a ball into the area you are talking about and then submit that screen shot with the overhead map showing so we can go to that same spot and have a look.

Actually, when this abnormality appears it is not just in one spot or particular area. It is through the entire course, usually where higher rough is evident. The latest course that this appears on for me is the Colonial Pgax design.

I have played the entire 18 holes of the Colonial PGAX design and did a fair amount of looking around and all the grass and rough textures look normal to me. No matted down rough that I could see.

And here is the light rough at Colonial on the same card.

Since 2006, I have had the following cards ATI 9250 (256) ATI X1600Pro (512) ATI X1950 Pro (512) ATI HD 2400 Pro (256) and now an ATI HD 3870 (512). None of these cards have ever shown me slanted grass, however I do know people online who have Nvidia cards and they do get slanted grass. I have yet to come across anyone using an ATI who gets the effect either.

The screenshot Boze supplied is what I see at Colonial in the longer rough. On some courses it is even more laid over where it actually appears flattened. As I also mentioned, this is only the case with about 30% of the 08 customs and none of the 07 ones. A course that displays the grass textures as perfect as I have seen in any custom design is Brookstone National 07. The collars, first cut and primary rough are beautifully rendered and look totaly natural, all grasses standing straight. Thanks for the screenies ZB, I can easily buy that look.

Thanks ZB, greatly appreciated. BTW, was the Pgax site down earlier? Would not display the page, will try to get on later.

Here is what I see with my Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS. Ive gotten used to the look of the slanted grass of stock textures on custom courses. What I dont like is using the rough/fairway textures from the same library in certain lighting conditions I cant tell where the fairway ends and the rough begins.

Actually in fact ,since grass blades grow towards ultraviolet rays, meaning the sun,and the SHORTER blades within the LONGER blades(rough) even starve for MORE sun, the more directional... NOT in a Cross-Hatched
pattern.... Then lets talk about the wind direction, longer blades arent going to show the opposite direction are they?
So, in my opinion, the Nvidia cards show the more correct way of the grasses.

Nothing wrong with Ati cards, again, this is just my own opinion.

If I had to choose a texture that more resembles what deep grass looks like, I would certainly have to choose the look that the ATI cards render.

OK, slanted or laying down or however else you choose to describe this weird look, it could certainly be a video card abnormality. But in my opinion there are other issues with the 08 stock grass textures and rendering them in 08 customs using the old CA. First of all, iregardless wether they are leaning, laying down or whatever, they not only appear way too long but also render much too coarse looking. This stuff looks more like Johnsons Water Grass or to put it in simple terms Crab Grass on steroids. You might see patches of this on a real golf course but never throughout the whole course. If that was the case, I would have to fire the Course Superintendant. These textures look totaly unatural, and belong in a pasture and not in a course design. You really cant lay the blame on the custom designers because that is just the way these textures look. The 07 stock textures and even going back further are a lot more natural and realistic looking. A perfect example of some excellent grass, deep rough or otherwise texture rendering is Brookstone National 07.
