I was having a lot of trouble with my courses having random crashes to desktop and after having tried everything from replanting, changing objects, checking shapes and redusing point count, i was still getting crash to desktop. These crashes seemed only to be occuring when on the putting green just before or after putting, so i looked at it from another approach...

I deleted all the inserted sounds and all three of the courses played through without a crash. I then reinserted the the sounds but limited them to 6 per hole,
2 at tee 2 midway and 2 at the green and the courses again had CRTD tendancies. I then deleted just the sounds that where in audable distance of the greens and left the rest and this seemed to work, i have not had a CRDT since. One of the courses i actually doubled in size with more objects and planting
and still no CRTD.

For some unknown reason it is possible that on some courses and on some machines there is an audio conflict with inserted sounds when placed near the greens and this throws the game to desktop - now just to test this with other designers who have unsolved CRTD.

Subsequent to my last post i experimented further with the placement bird sounds by limiting the number to 3 per hole ie one at tee, midway and green this gives a total of 54 bird sounds in total.

All the courses played through without a crash, so this rebukes my last statement about placing sounds around the greens, it appears that there is a limit to the total sounds that a particular course can handle before it becomes unstable.

By substantially reducing the bird sounds i noticed other in game changes -
The course life became significantly more active and the galleries almost doubled in density, this to me is a sure sign that the bird sounds where draining the memory from the game.

As i mentioned previously i had about 108 bird sounds and the courses would crash at random, when i removed the sounds the courses ran fine.

In summary:
I suppose it depends on the complexity of the course design and since i add sounds last there may only be only a limited amount of space left for the sounds before a critical point is reached.

I never noticed an actual degredation in game performance by adding more sounds, the game still ran smooth with no lag etc. its just that it would without warning throw me to the desktop without any error message.

My courses are running fine now at 3 sounds per hole, i could add more and try to determine where the critical point is, but i think ill leave it at that.
