I have a contour plan with hole layout for a desert course and was wondering if it was possible to use the contours to effect elevations within the course architect, achieving a very realistic terrain, any tutorials or guidance would be very much appreciated. I know you can use dems but the resolution is to large for the course which is built throughand over a series of wadis.

new to the program so forgive any obvious lack of knowledge

Even if you used 10 meter DEM data in Terrain Assist, you still would need to do fairway undulations, mounding, bunkering and breaks on the greens. In short, there really is no shortcut to developing a gameplan and then diving in. But its a great headstart to have good hole overviews that show contours. Take a look at Jeffs tutorials at smilioats.com, especially the ones covering the two-shape method.

First, I would determine the overall elevation change from tee to green and work from there. Work in the key fairway contours and the green complex. I drop bunkers last after doing all the contouring so that they flow into the surrounding terrain.

Make a backup copy of the tca and then start yanking on the elevation tools. If you dont like how it comes out, then revert to the backup copy.
