Hi, I know I asked you to do Royal St. Georges on your Royal Troon comments, I saw your reply today. I started watching the 93 British, and decided to attempt this course. Faldo shot 67 in the final round and lost !!! I just wanted to let you know a head of time. I tried to send you a PM, but the PM is not working. I didn’t want to post this on your Troon Comments. Hiker Bob, did the structures last year and they have just been sitting.....

The terrain work is insane, and if you want to help out, I would be more than happy to let you have a go. I have the general holes kind of shaped I dont use the terrain assist program, so everything is hand built. I havent built a course in 2 years also. I have no idea if this course is going to be any good it is a long shot, cause St. George’s has nothing on it, almost no bushes or anything. I’ll be honest I don’t know this golf course at all, it is going to be guesswork, with all the sand hills. U can pick up things from the tv coverage, but still….

I just watched the Telecasts from 93, man I have a crappy VHS recording. Put the 03 film on DVD. There is a few things I like, #1 is the course flag is the St. Georges cross which is cool. Than from viewing the tapes, the greens are crazy with fall offs, false fronts and mounds. It is kind of hard also to make a course difficult that has no water, or really any major trouble. In 03 on 17&18 no one could hit those fairways, they have ridges in the middle that kicks the ball in the rough.

For me it is kind of like Muirfield a course that I always wanted to play on a video game, right now I have some extra time to do the work.

The question is how accurate can you get a course that you have never seen or played? The answer is always going to be subjective. The course is always going to be off. For example on this course I didnt like visually how the tee shot set up from the new added tee on hole #10. For visual purpose I changed the rough shading. I also added 10 yards to the hole. My belief is you try to create picture and bring to life the features of the hole, after that it is up to your creative nature to bring that hole to life. To get every shape and every bunker angle in perfect order is not possible.

from using the 93 British Open tapes, the 2nd shot on 10, is straight up hill to a platue green. Watching Faldo and Norman hit their 2nd shot in, this is pretty much what it looked like on TV. Anyone who knows this course please chime in, any extra information will help for sure. (going for the 93 texture look, not the burned out brown from 03)

Granted I know, this type of course is not going to be loved by many, it is different. At the same time, I hope the people who like these sea side links uk courses, will get the joy of playing another British Open course on the PC.

Trees ??? On Royal St. Georges ?, they are only on 1 hole, and it has the most insane green I have seen yet. Their is a 1150 yards of Fence line, that I more than likely going to have to pass on. The Fence line would put more structures than objects (trees/bushes) on the course. This is about as bland of a course you will find, but the terrain makes up for it. Maybe somehow add in the Nuclear Power Plant.

The TV telecasts, web information, general research, the course visually, so far kind of looks like the real thing. The object are placed in the correct spots. There are exceptions. For example hole 14 has OB posts every 5 feet, well that would add too many structures, so I placed them at 21 yards.

The terrain for the more part matches the course. If there is a 45-foot sand hill on the left of 5, it is there. If #5 is downwind, you can drive it on the green, the hole is 420. In to the wind, you lay-up, and have a blind 2nd shot over massive sand dunes.

Green shapes are correct, bunker are correct, and the planting because it is so few, is very easy . I even added a few extra bushes.

The greens have the general breaks, but everyone that has a key feature, is on the course, aka Duncans Hollow.

Hopefully, want you want is some one who knows the course, to play this simulation and recognizes the holes. If they can see the key features of that holes, you really did a good job. Sometimes you can pull it off, and other times its out of whack....

St. Georges also has wider fairways 27 to 35 yards, to allows for all the mounding, bumps an hollows. The fairway widths depends on the course and type of course....aka US Open....

I havent created the textures and designed the specific game play for the course yet. Just on standard textures, the course is a tad easy.

One of the things I look at is how the course plays in real life. Right now it is playing close to what it did in 93. Nick Faldo and Payne Stewart shot a 63. Greg Norman shot 64 in the final round to win. What that means relative to the TW game, is guys are going to be shooting in the 50ties. To get the course firm and fast like 85 and 03 were the guys were shooting around par is not going to happen. At the same time, you dont want someone spinning wedges 20 feet on a links course.

What makes this course difficult in real life is the players cant control the ball on the ground cause of all the bumps, hills, and than all the fall offs on the greens themselves. In spots you can hit a good shot and end up dead. The rough for the most part seems to be tame, unless you are Sergio on hole 17 in the 3rd round of 03.

The par 5s are pretty easy. The Par 5 7th is the easiest hole on the course, as long as you hit the fairway you can get home. Hole 14 in real life can play hard cause it has OB running down the entire hole. Well even in wind, in the TW game, you need to hit a terrible shot for your ball to go OB. The hole is 550 yards I even added 30 yards to it, and still make eagle or birdie everytime. It was than decided to make the 4th a par 4 just like in 93. For the TW game, it creates a hole, that you now have to be careful on, one can make 5 or 6 in a minute, that is great element to have.

That is it for now.......

If you are a die hard, pure links course kind of person, you are going to love it. If you are an americian who is used to playing parkland courses, you will delete it.

For those of you who remember this course this is the 2nd hole. Again some of the holes had to be destroyed.

Here is another pic of the new par 3. This hole is replacing the hole that was like 18 at sawgrass. It had like 300 structures around the water, it has not worked in 3 years so it had to be changed.

I have decided cause of the limits of this game. To stop trying to strip down courses and go high end only, and take the extreme approach. Or just retire…

Here is the deal, tomorrow I am going out and buying the highest price video card at Best Buy or Circuit City I am than going to test these courses. If they work fine on higher settings, I will release them sometime in the future, if not I am done with this game until EA changes stuff.

I have spent way too much time pulling out data and destroying terrain by optimizing. Pulling out trees and structures the entire nine yards. …..

I just took 13 megs out of a course, and on higher settings it will still crash my machine. Royal St. George’s to me is a nothing course as far as extras, I can crash that course now on strong winds and with all the settings really high. It never crashed before I added in Stock Rough……

I than went in an used the default settings EA has, and it lowered every single setting down like nothing for the game.

I don’t know the reason for this, it seems like all the designers when I started this game are gone, or they release only 1 or 2 courses.

The lighting in this game it starting to get to me. On this Carolina Starling course, half the holes look amazing the other half look terrible it just depends on the time of day you play the course.

You look in one direction it looks great, than you look back down the hole from the reverse angle and it looks like pure crap. Yea I am ticked, cause on a course like this Carolina Starling if the lighting worked correct it would look amazing. The water is the same, one way it looks good the other it does not.

This angle the water looks pretty good. On the hole before it looks dead. from the reverse angle down to the green, the course looks totally different.

The water will be a bit flat looking on low shader settings viewing when there is nothing around the water to make a reflection. It is one of the drawbacks of the more realistic looking water, but even though it appears flatter, I still think it is far more realistic than the dark rippled water that comes from med to higher shader settings.

Well the hunt for a video card was a failure. I dont have a PCI express slot. No big deal, get the next model, nope sorry need to upgrade the power supply. Cant get a power supply. The Sony Vio does things different. Less than 4 years that is all this PC lasted. Sony doesnt even make desktops anymore.....

The cool thing I found was you can now upgrade your PC to HD. If that is the case, this game could be pretty wild. The HD consoles are amazing....

Back to this TW game, it has gone backwards, you are floating down the river with no paddle. The Lighting is terrible, even with stock stuff. If you really look you can see the difference from going 1 direction to another.

There is no excuse for the water the last two years. The way it looks in 08 depends on which direction you are facing.

This is a picture of the same hole that was posted above. Forget the 05 textures. The water looks so much better. In 05 you could line the entire area with railroad ties. from 06 thru 08, everytime, only half the railroad ties would show up.

Some of these courses get like 5,000 downloads we need 5,000 emails to EA or Tiburon.

1) We need good-looking water
2) We need a course installer
3) We need a Library Creator
4) We need a Course Architect Program
5) We need better lighting
6) We need to be able to use custom structures that dont go black.
7) We also need the ability to make textures reflex correct in the game
8) We need to be able to bring more data in to the courses
9) We need better galleries
9) Last off bring back the course music

Aaahh the Sony Vaio... I found out the hard way also a few years back, gave it to my kid, he bought a 100.00 case with power supply that was sufficient enough for agp.
Took motherboard out and everything else along with new card and put it into the new case.
LOL gotta give him credit..saved alot!

I will have that special white building ready for St Georges over this coming weekend and will email it off. Nice looking course so far. I wouldnt fret so much about some of the game limitations, we all know them and enjoy the game in spite of them. Continue with the great layouts and detail work within the limitations we are stuck with, even though you would like to do it better. A real good representation of the real thing that is good fun to play will be a winner in everybodies book. The big picture seems to be the most important, and a balanced amount of eye candy and extras and special work adds in to this. You also know where to send the course(s) for a testing with thechnical results(framerates etc) so give a shout.
