Anyone have a favorite/reliable way to get a DEM for modeling an actual course? I have found a couple sites online but Im unsure if they are what I need or not.

My favorite is data.geocomm.com, which has 10M and 30M data for all of the US. Free data, but requires registration.

There is also seamless.usgs.gov, where you can download based on lat/long coordinates, which is a time-saver because you dont need to trim your DEM with the 3dem program.

Good luck.
