I've been messing around with a few different course ideas lately and I thought I'd post some progress on a few of them as a way to get myself motivated to get something finished.

The first thing is actually not something I'm going to release. It was just a test plot that I wanted to try.

I wanted to see if it was possible to place a course in a the middle of a metropolitan city. I know EA already did that with Central Park, but they did it poorly. The buildings around the perimeter were poorly done and too small and didn't convey a sense of actually being there.

Now imagine playing in that downtown city course at night, under floodlighting.

That was the challenge I set out for myself, and I'm pretty happy with the results, especially considering it only took 3 days.

I used the CLS to make all the surrounding buildings (and the moon). Images can't entirely convey this but it does have a much better sense of feeling like a real space with large buildings towering over you. The tall tower at the back is over 500 feet high.

It's fun to notice that the water reflects the dark sky. The darker perimeter and 'lighting' was created with graduated textures (about 30 different shades of rough from dark to light).

Unfortunately, The night sky is only possible using texmod, and it seems few if any users want to use that despite its obvious benefits. I see no point in making a whole course and releasing it because the night lighting effect is pointless without a night sky.

It was nonetheless a fun little experiment.

I decided to make a daytime version just to see the difference. I took a screncap that matches the last one. In the process, I noticed that for some reason, the game randomly makes some of the buildings semi-transparent. You can see the building in the back on the right is really faded as you can see the sky behind it. Not to mention the Q Tower you can see the 'Q' on the back wall through the side on the right.

But the game seems to do this to different buildings each time I load it in. It wasn't noticeable at night but it looks odd in the daylight, where the buildings are more visible.

This game engine sure can be fluky.

The city buildings were only going to be a little experiment, but it seemed like a waste to toss all those buildings away, so I wrapped the city perimeter idea into the par 3 course I had been working on in the spring. It was about 60% done and set in the mountains, but its now set in the heart of a bustling city, replete with the ambient sounds of both the city without, and the natural wildlife within.

I''ve been trying to post some pics but can''t at the moment. It''s taken quite a lot of work to get this finished. I''ve lost track of the number of buildings but I think it''s around 70 to 80 buildings around the course perimieter (office and apartment towers, townhouses, factories and industrial buildings and a sports stadium behind 9/18 green.)

Not to mention a 40 car perpetual looped train

I''ve basically built a city around the course. It''s quite something. It feels like what EA''s Central Park fictional course should have felt like.

I''m a little stunned that the course isn''t crashing.

I''m hoping to release it by the end of the week

I'll try a few pics this way.

As I said, the city building takes a while. Here you can see the nice townhouses to the right of #3/12

They must cost a lot as they have a nice view looking out over the course and city:

Awesome work on your project, Quietly, be it at night time or during the day !
The city buildings and the environment are spectacular (even more at night)...
Can't wait to see the finished course : I guess it will be a fantasy course, right ?
Congratulations on a great job !

Cheers !

I was almost done the course when I realised I forgot to put any cars on the streets. It looks a little strange to see this large city surrounding the course completely devoid of life. So, I'll just be a few more days adding in some cars driving around and it'll be ready for testing.

Continuing to add a few more vehicles to the surroundings. Adding some big rigs delivery their goods is the last step I hope. I just checked the size of the CLS text file for idle curiosity. By copy and pasting it into Word, I found out that it currently sits at 594 pages of text... so basically the CLS for this course is a novel, and not a small one.

On to my next little idea. I've been toying with wintertime golf. It's another different look for the game and presents an interesting challenge for golfers.

basically, what if someone went out in the winter and cleared snow off the fairways and greens for golfers to play:

Are you using sand reactions to make it look like snow is coming up with the shot?

A quick little test plot but it actually looks decent. The snow behaves like plugged sand making accuracy off the tee crucial in course conditions like these.

Yes the snow behaves like sand, although the ball disappears when a golfer hits into it, which would almost certainly happen with a real ball and snow. Makes for a very penal course.

Was able to add falling snow with the CLS. I can alter it hole to hole, so I can have it start snowing lightly on one hole, heavier on the next and them lighter again, or not at all. Adds a little more winter flavour to the proceedings.

I've managed to whip up some de-foliated deciduous trees with the CLS since leafy trees wouldn't make sense in this environment. They're flat cut-outs, but they look convincing enough as long as they're kept away from the immediate line of play.

By the time you get to 18, it'll be a bit blustery, so do be sure to dress your golfer appropriately!
