The problem was on Gameranger I couldn't host, only join. This might be a more general problem than on Gameranger, I don't know. Problem gone now. I tracked the problem down to this: when I re-installed the game a few days before, before I did I un-installed the old version, then noticed that process still left an EA Sports folder. It had a few files I wanted to preserve so I just renamed it to EA Sports OLD. Then I re-installed in a different location. I didn't know it but the installer put the stock courses into EA Sports OLD. Then the Caddie did that with customs too. The Caddie didn't complain that its old folder settings were obsolete. The result was that everything worked playing a solo Custom Game OFFline. And I could still Join and play fine online on Gameranger. But when I set and hosted a game on Gameranger I could Start, pick a course and conditions, but then the Next button (to go to the Lan Lobby) did nothing. The Back button also did nothing. Even CTRL-Alt-Delete only brought up an hourglass cursor. I had to hard-reboot the computer. This occurred several times.

I finally took a close look at my files and saw the Courses and Libraries inside the EA Sports OLD folder. I figured that was probably the problem. I deleted the folder, un-installed and re-installed the game and customs again. The Courses and Libraries went into the right place this time. I reset the Caddie's folder settings to the new locations. All is fixed, I can host again.
