Apparently up until now only 90m DEMs were available for free for "The rest of the world". 30m DEMs were available only for the USA + certain specific areas. (I'm talking as if I've been at this for years, truth is I only found out yesterday what a DEM was...) At this address 'http://www.gdem.aster.ersdac.or.jp/search.jsp' the entire world, more or less, is available for free. You only have to register, which is free as well. It says you need to give an organization name etc, but if you choose 'personal' you don't.
Another thing course designers might like to try is 'Glass2k', (For Vista, don't know if it works in W7). It is a tiny prog. that makes windows transparent in 10% increments. This means that making the CA window 80-90% transparent you can basically trace the desired hole from any course you have taken from Google Maps/Earth.
Still waiting for my copy of "TW....06", so I can't try my hand at making courses yet. I've got my plans though.
Hopefully this has been of some help. |

Update : The site is saturated with requests. The best time I found to get any data files was very early in the morning (and I mean 3 or 4 a.m. (Continental European time)), so have patience if you're going to download anything. |

In the search page I choose 'Select tiles directly', then zoom in on the world map to where I want. Once you get to a certain level of zoom you can then press the 'Grid' key. To actually choose the tiles you want you have to press 'Start', then move the mouse over the map clicking any tiles you want. (OK, it helps if you have a general idea of the place you want, but the actual tile size is about 30 miles x 30 miles @ 30m, so the area is quite big. We'll have to learn how to clip Tiffs in 3DEM....). Sorry I cant' help with the co-ordinates thingy.
Word of warning though, not wanting to dampen any expectations, but after my first day of downloading (2 files) I'm finding it impossible to download anything. All it does is the little blue circle twirls around endlessly. It's as if the servers are completely saturated.
Looking at info I've found out that only 16 people can download from the servers at the same time....so if you're the 17th you have to wait (and when you think that this is the only* site where you can get free 30m worldwide DEMs...you're having to compete against the world for a place).
*I have found a NASA site ( http://reverb.echo.nasa.gov/reverb/#utf8=%E2%9C%93&spatial_map=satellite&spatial_type=rectangle ). You have to order it etc and anyway, they get the DEM for the Japanese site. I've ordered 2-3 files....I'll see what happens before I say any more. |

Update : Good news, I've received the data sets I ordered (free). I actually got them from this site : https://wist.echo.nasa.gov/api/ (This is only an older version of the 'reverb' site above and in the next few weeks/months they are going to decommission it). The 'wist echo' site has a very good tutorial on how to search for and order the 'Aster GDEM' files which are the ones you need. However the new 'reverb' site is much more user friendly and it's probably the site to use.
One thing, it takes a couple of days to receive your files via e-mail (they send you an e-mail with a direction you click on to download your zip files immediately).
I've found out that in the last few days/week the ASTER GDEM site has been updating their files or something, so that's probably why it's impossible to download anything from them.
The only thing I need now is my copy of '....06', I'm still waiting for it.
P.S. - If you are in to course design the 30m DEMs are definitely the ones to get. They are so much better than the 90m ones, by a wide margin (as all those who have used the U.S ones already know). |
