Gents,
I'm still on TW07 and have successfully hosted and joined IP games getting all of the router and firewall configs correct. But recently, I've run into this when trying to host after setting up either a custom or stock course:

"couldn't create the game, the name might already be in use"

I've even tried to change the name to something that couldn't possibly be in use.

Anyone run into this and have any suggestions?

I've not run into that but I would suggest first rebooting your computer and then JSJarvis wrote a real good tutorial on the use of Hamaci for setting up LAN/IP games rather than using the traditional method. I've used it several times and it works great.

The link to the tutorial is: http://coursedownloads.com/extras/details.asp?id=494

Hope that helps.

Thx, but Hamachi screwed up my networking in the past and I've just monkeyed around for hours to get that where I need it.... so I've gotta find an answer for the conventional hookup.... probably need to re-install.

There have been problems for years now with the IP-IP LAN game setup in TW. That was the whole reason for the Hamachi tutorial. I am betting that you will find the same problems even after you reinstall. If you don't want to do the Hamachi solution or some other VPN type of setup, you may not be able to get the IP-IP option to work.

Doesn't make sense after all this time...... are there any cache files I can dump?

If you don't port forward all of the TW ports, you will not be able to play ip to ip without Hamachi or something similar. No way around it

I wouldn't go quite that far. Hamachi (or similar) just makes it so much easier and seems to keep the connection stable. I have a couple of folks that I have been playing games with (in particular the TW series) for quite a few years now that still prefer the old fashioned method and I accommodate them (although it is not as stable and we occassionally have disconnect issues). My router (in my case a At&t U-Verse Gateway) did not require me to port forward anything for TW in order to host IP-IP (although I had to on a couple of other programs to work properly).

Well, I don't think you read my first post as I've hosted and joined numerous games behind a router using IP2IP.

I think I figured out some of what I was doing wrong. First, I turned the Windows Firewall off. Just not necessary. Then, making sure all of the router settings were correct for port nos. and DMZ. I think one of the main problems was that when I left hosting at times, I would simply leave the game and not log off. I think that's why I was getting the error message. So I rebooted not only my game, but my system and had no problem hosting an 18 hole match the other night using an EA stock course. But I do know that custom courses work ok too.

Glad it is working for you although I will just mention something - if you are doing the DMZ thing, you did not need to worry about port numbers as DMZ opens every port on the computer that you have DMZ'd.

Along that line, I hope you are turning the DMZ mode back off and some sort of firewall back on when you are finished playing. You are asking for trouble if you don't. Don't fall into the trap of thinking "it won't happen to me" - I work on a few systems every week these days where people thought that.

Good luck!
