I know that people almost always prefer real courses to fictional when it comes to downloading and playing. My issue is that for almost any course, I am relying on second hand information and even if there is tons of help online regarding layout and such, I never seem to be able to get it right. I know the idea is to give the overall feel of playing the real thing, but that is tough. Some around here are really very good at it. I, however, am not.

So my question is this - what are you looking for in a real course design?

1. Accuracy
2. Realistic looking
3. Extras, such as custom structures
4. How important is a Pano that fits the course?
5. Some courses are more well known than others. Would you play the lesser known as quickly as you would a famous one?
6. List your ideas here

Or are you just as content on a fantasy course? If so

1. Looking for realism?
2. Rather see non-realistic but fun to play aesthetics? (meaning it wouldn't be something you would see in real life, but might be fun to play with your buddies)
3. Longer course with medium difficulty?
4. Shorter course with more difficult layout?
5. List your ideas here

I would love to do some real courses but there are two things that tend to keep me away. First, most of the more famous ones are already done, some with more than one version. Second, I really have no say in what the layout is, and that is a big thing to me.

Please let me know your thoughts and also if there are any real courses that just scream to be done that aren't already, please list them.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

What I prefer is a realistic looking course. Also when the designer creates the course design the course with NORMAL greens. Alot of the courses I play at different tournament sites set up tournaments with ...say dry or wet greens. And if the desginer creates the course with dry greens it can cost the player a few holes till he figures out that they are putting faster than they normaly would. Do you know I mean...did that make sense...THANKS

Thanks for the reply. As for your question, when a designer uses textures that already exist, such as textures from a stock course, they cannot change the characteristics of those textures. What that means is that you cannot change how the ball reacts to the texture. That is done when the library is created and after that it is locked in stone. BUT, when the library is created, the designer can dictate how the texture will play. For example, you could (theoretically) make a green texture that reacts like wet mud or you could make it like a sheet of ice, or anywhere in between. The library creator program has presets for all these textures. Most people leave them at the presets. I always do, except on the very rare occasion. And if I do change it from the standard settings, I always let the player know in advance. Then the other side of the coin comes into play. Most designers will check the playability of all pins on all settings and/or conditions. Every so often almost every designer misses one here and there. When that happens you might see a pin that is very difficult to work with.

Hope that answers your question. And thanks again.

Hi Steve...
I would say I tend to like realistic (not so much real) courses...To me it gives the designer a chance to put their creative thoughts onto a plot and develope a playable golf course.Every real golf course in the world today began with that thought. Many of the founders of course design all share the same philosophy...build a course that is enjoyable for the average player yet challenging for the pro....I for one would like to see a designer create a terrain for an entire plot...even applying trees and lakes...then create the routing of the holes to work with that terrain...You can always add creeks and streams as needed..This is the way real course architects are presented with projects today...Add multiple tees to give the course different player view points...Try implementing styles from some of your favorite courses or designers on each hole and the result will be a truly natural, beautiful design....just my thoughts....Chad
....the file attached is a Greg Norman designed hole...flows perfect with the terrain.....

I really dig playing far out fantasy courses with a bunch of elevation changes, rolling fairwyas and rolling greens. I look at any course I play as a fantasy course unless I've actually played there or seen it on TV a bunch of times...How could you look at it as a real course if you've never seen it or played it?

I tried making one real course (Jeremy Ranch) which turned into Western Lodge, I enjoyed doing it because I had played there a bunch and new "most" of the terrain. I'd have no problem doing another real course if i hadn't played there but I more enjoy thinking sh!t up as I go.

I've played courses online that I played in real life and was dissapointed mainly in the terrain, plantings and objects aren't as big deal for me. But Plantings and objects can turn a mediocre fantasy design into a brilliant one.

I'd think 90% of the courses I play online are fantasy courses unless I look and see they are real. Theres a fine line between a fanatasy course and a real course you've never played in real life or seen.

Here is what I look for in designing and downloading real courses

1. Accuracy

The most important thing... and Im not talking about every little break in the green. The elevations have to be somewhat similar and the layout has to be fairly close. Nothing is going to be perfect and close matters. I played a real course once that is one of the most flat courses around and it had 50 ft elevation changes on many holes. I think the layout is #1, the elevations are #2, the planting and trees are #3, and everything else follows.

The TA tool helps with most of this, but is not always available and with some courses just doesnt work. That is when the designer really needs to go above and beyond.

2. Realistic looking

Doesnt hurt...

As close to the real thing as possible once again.

3. Extras, such as custom structures

Only if the structures are something the course is known for. For example, Augusta wouldnt be complete without its bridges, St. Andrews without the buildings and clubhouse around the 17th and 18th holes, the clubhouse at Riviera, etc.

4. How important is a Pano that fits the course?

Again it depends. Ocean courses cant have treeline panos, and plains courses cant have mountain panos. This is not a huge factor and resources are limited here. Most courses will be fine with a treeline type pano, but try to get as close as possible.

5. Some courses are more well known than others. Would you play the lesser known as quickly as you would a famous one?

No, I need to at least have heard of the course.

I'm with BGravilicous on this. I prefer fantasy courses with large elevation changes and great plantings and objects. Probably the best example of this was The Course at the Copper Canyon by Justastiffy .... I think it was from 06.

Thanks for the responses. It helps to know if my likes are the same or different from those of others.
