What processes are used to test a course. I have noticed designers requesting volunteers for course testing and would be willing to do this if I thought I was capable of achieving the required level. I am also in the process of trying to design my own course, which I have called Arnside Lakes and would greatly appreciate any advice about course testing and uploading of screen shots prior to supplying final course. Best regards, Jimbo63.

Hi...
When you are designing a course you can test your course anytime you want, even when you only designed one hole.
Open Course architect06 and compile your course. When you compiled your course a new file will be generated(; coursename.tcr ), usually generated in same location as you course architect file (; coursename.tca ).
When you found the compiled course (; coursename.tcr ), you can install this file in TW08 game with TW Caddie08, same way you install TW08 custom courses.

When you found some people to test your new course, you can send them the compiled coursefile (; coursename.tcr ), so they can play your new course and give you feedback.

Some great tutorials on link below:

Also some help below:
http://www.coursedownloads.com/forum/posts.asp?post=4742&forum=14

Some help about taking screenshots:
http://www.coursedownloads.com/forum/posts.asp?post=7255&bookmark=

Start TW08 game and play your course and when you found nice pic:
Go with mouse cursor to centre of screen and click and hold the right key of your mouse.
At same time hit the printscreen key (;PrtScr) on your keyboard.
After that close TW08 game......and open program: Paint
on top choose: Edit.......and choose: Paste......and save the pic as: JPEG or JPG

Note: you can find paint in windows xp: on desktop go to: Start....programs....accessoires

When you want to upload the pic to coursedownloads:
In forum reply to a post (; or create new topic ) and on bottom you will have option: SUBMIT
You will see: Select file......browse to the screenshot pic (; JPEG ) you saved before and hit: Submit

Very good info from Gunpower. Also, helping to test other courses is a gr8 way to learn. Anyone can help out. When you see someone asking for help, just hollar. What most of us want is someone to tell us if they see any bad spots, IE: any raised edges between textures, any tears between textures, any creases, floating trees, floating stuctures, transparent textures, and general playability. Unplayable greens, usually anything that would make a course unplayable. Sometimes I just want someone to play a course and tell me if they see anything that doesn't look right. Sometimes I want certain testers to test particular things. Such as greens only, or fairways only. Just ask what the designer would like you to look for and he will tell you.

It really helps to just have other eyes look over your course. I'm usually looking so close at a course that it's very easy to miss something, so to have someone else look at it is a must!! Don't make the mistake of not having your course tested!!!!!!!:)

I think testing is sometime misunderestimared, I you get mty drift. It's a very important step in the design process. This would be a pretty easy but helpfull tutorial. I haven't put one out in a while, so maybe I'll get to this next.

Although I've only released a couple of courses, I have really spent a lot of time testing my own work, and I have learned a lot from some generous folks who helped me on my first release. Without them, I night have embarrased myself a bit!

A couple notes to add to the above:

File sizes are often too big to be sent as email attachements. I was introduced to yousendit.com here. It's free, pretty easy and works fine. I have beem playing around with Windows Live Skydrive a bit, I think that might be even better.

Once you have had a course tested by some folks, the feedback you get will really help you have an idea what to look for when self-testing. I know it worked this way for me.

Somewhere I have a checklist I made after I sent out an early version of my course. I'll see if I can look it up and maybe post it here. The way I set it up was to do a checklist for each hole, making notes for "needs work" and "good items.

I use pen and paper and make hole-by-hole notes. Sometimes I will load up a course and play though all 18. Sometimes I will focus on a single hole or even a particular green. I always do a run-through just to make sure I have no blind tee shots. Sometimes I overlook these because I'm an E-key addict when I play.

I do a lot of testing in practice mode. It allows me to move freely from place to place around a given hole by clicking on the map and try several lines of attack without leaving the tee. Practice mode also lets you skip from one hole to another in any order, and it doesn't end until you exit.

Try to dive into playing Expert sometime if you haven't already. You don't really have to be competitive to play well enough to test for playability. Having a course be playable on expert is a good thing to aim for (mostly having to do with the ball coming to rest normally on greens and fairways, not rolling off because they are to steep). Making it playable on expert gives it a chance of being included in tours & tournaments.

ah, sorry for the long post, hope it helps.

Very good points nuttywoody, I forgot to mention that I make all my courses for adv/expert very dry greens. So that is very important when testing, I always test vdry greens, adv/expert.. Of course I'm sure there are a lot of other things, but don't let that stop you from testing other courses.
