Hello mates, Would you please, help me to solve my trouble.
Recently, I changed my GPU, from NVIDIA 8800GT to ATI HD4850. Since then, trees' shadows began to flicker in most of custom courses. I tried every possible combinations of TW[06] option settings to no avail.
And I realized stock courses' shadows never flicker. It occurs only in custom courses, but there are a few exceptions. Anchors Cove, Blue River Run the North Course, North Woods at Deer Run, and the Chall's Series. Other than them, my top33 courses are all dead. I think, OK courses' shadows are always there, I mean, they never fade.
Currently, I am using this driver, http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/radeonx-xp and I think I tried every possible combinations of its options.
Any suggestions would be greatly aprreciated. Thanks. |

Hi all, I have tried Catalist 8.9, 8.12, and 9.4. All of them failed, and now I guess it is a generation gap between GPU and TW06.
Using Catalist 1.2, it is not too bad playing old favarite courses. Now I am trying to used to the flickering shadows.lol
And the last but not the least, I thank from the bottom of my heart to the course designers of 03 to 06, you were fabulous!
I hope TW10 will fit to HD4850. Thanks. |

| I am not a total expert on them, but I hazard a guess that the 4850 is less powerfull than the 8800. the xx50 series video cards from ATI are primarily desinged for home theater and multimedia, the xx70 and xx90 are trhe gaming cards. |

Goro......... theres a known stuttering issue with some of the HD4000 (; and some 3000 ) series cards. ATI issued a hotfix to remedy the situatioin. Go to the address at the bottom of this post and download and install the hotfix appropriate to your operating system (; unless youre using Linux.) Let us know if that fixes the issue....

jbcalg, Otto, I truly appreciate your advice. But unfortunately, both of them said "..... not compatible ....."
jmeier, I also appreciate a hint you gave me. When my 8800GT broke, it was still under guarantee. But the vendor didn't have its stock, so they gave me a replacement list. There were 9800GT+, HD4850, etc. As a big fan of Oblivion, I wanted a ATI board.
That was my mistake. Only after this issue happened, I realized what should always be in my life. That was not the Oblivion, but the TW06 and old great custom courses.
Anyway, that's that. An ancient American sage once said, "You can get used to Anything". I guess I could.
Have a nice weekend and good rounds. |

Oops.. right you are SB......... that's what I got from a search of their site.
Goro, it seems that the 4850 has had ( commonly ) overheating issues, which users have solved ( easily found on google ). I really doubt that that's the issue here, though. Just wondering,...... did you use a drivercleaner to remove all traces of the Nvidia driver before installing the 4850? |

Hi Otto, thank for your caring words. Yes, I did use drivercleaner, but the issue happend.
Hello SandieBunker, thank for your kindness. I knew that they were rather old, but one was a hotfix and the other was a non-official driver. I hoped some magic was going to happen. lol
Having so many precious XP applications, I wouldn't change the OS. And this machine would be my last XP one, so I want it to be perfect. Then, I have bought a new 8800GT. lol But this time, it has 1GB VRAM. This is good to play the Oblivion. I can now enjoy the tranquillity of beautiful courses and Cyrodiil.
I heartly appreciate all the suggestion you gave me on the topic. |

Actually, the 4850 is nothing more than a slightly downclocked 4870 which is a gaming card. The 4860 is every bit as powerful as the nV 9800 series and certainly more powerful than the 8800 GT..... |

| Goro........ really glad you got things worked out. The G92 chip ( the 8800GT is based on that chip ) is a real masterpiece from Nvidia. Hang on to that 3850.......... most likely it'll work better than that 8800Gt if you can find the right drivers........ |

Having played with both 8800GT and HD4850, I feel 4850 is driven by more progressive technology. All the tree shadows of 8800's have a same shading, whereas 4850's have a couple of gradation. 4850's shadows resemble the original trees in detail. 8800's are merely polygons.
4850 looks like struggling to render sensitive shadows, but is failing. The pity of it!
