Sorry this is long, I just wanted to get all the facts in. I am having a repetitive problem with TW08 and downloaded courses. I could really use some help on this because I am stymied. Several courses (;i.e. Quail Hollow, Bandon Dunes, and Carters Grove to name a few)are locking up when the game posts the scores after each player has putted. The system message says Please wait... and then it switches to the next tee box and the appropriate golfer. This is on the tour scores, not the single round scorecard display. For example, Bandon Dunes and Quail Hollow are locking consistantly on the same hole. Bandon Dunes, Hole 3, and Quail Hollow;; Hole 1. I have been playing custom courses for a few weeks now and no problem until recently. (;Last few days.) When this happens, the only thing I am able to do is to shut down and restart my PC. Then I usually get the message that the game was terminated abnormally and would I like to continue to play the game. I have restarted each game from the beginning multiple times and sometimes I do make it past the hole that is causing the lock up. However, in a just a few more holes it happens again when the scores are being shown. BTW: I have already modified the HoleType.tcn to be a read only, so my lockup is not caused by that file.
I have been looking at my PC for problems, but have been unsuccessful. I did run into a problem about 2 weeks ago when the game was running slow as molasses. In checking, I found that one of the memory cards was not registering. Once I re-seated them, the PC has been fine. I am runing a PC that is very capable of handling this game and for 90% of the time, it runs smooth as silk. Here is what I have:
Dell XPS 400 3ghz Dual Pentium Dual Core Processors, and 1gig of RAM. NVIDIA GeForce 6800 video card 145 gig drive with 86gig of space left
I have been reading up on FPS, but not sure where I change it on my system. I cant seem to find a control panel for the video card.
Any help anyone can be with this issue would be very much appreciated. I would like to get to the point where I participate in tourneys, but this is holding me up. Oh...problem is offline, I have not tried to play online yet.
BTW: Courses are set at Very Dry, Pro Tour, Breezy, Difficult Pin. |

Hi.... You did the confidence folder fix ?
When you start playing TW08 game, it is important to know there is a bug in the game: When you played some courses you will see the loading times between holes are increasing, the game will become slower and slower. Do next steps to solve the problem:
On desktop you will see folder: My documents........ inside look for: Tiger woods PGA tour 2008....and inside go to folder: Career. Inside Career go to folder: Players.......and inside look for your playersname folder. Now you will see folder: Confidence.....and inside you will find files: Hole Type.tcn......and.....Shot type.tcn Now right click both files (; hole.tcn +Shot type.tcn) and delete both files. When you did this: restart TW08 game and play 1 hole on any stock course and close TW08 game. Go back to same confidence folder and you will see both files are regenerated: but now they are very small size (; 85kb or something like that) Now right click both files (; Type.tcn......and.....Shot type.tcn) and choose : Properties....and check box: READ ONLY. Do this for both files. |

running SLI ?
the Readme.txt file says you may have problems, try runing 1 card/disabling SLI if so
could also be heat, especially if running 2 GPUs
1gb ram pretty low too
FPS (;frames per second) is a reading of how your video card is rendering the images you cant directly change the FPS you can reduce your ingame graphics settings to get a better level though |

Here is an update: I took the steps that gunpower61 suggested. I had done part of it a little over a week ago. Only difference was that I did not make the the same change to the ShotType.tcn and the HoleType.tcn, so I went back and followed his instructions doing both files again. Both are on read only now. So that done, I went back with new players on Quail Hollow Hole 1 in the custom match choosing Fred Couples and KJ Choi...both are custom players I have downloaded from this site. I did notice that the single round scorecard was the method of score reporting, so it was just the three players scores. The game and shots were flawless in their rendtions until between the 4th and 5th holes. Once again, the scorecard seemed to stick in place and after about 20 seconds, the total screen went black. Had to shutdown and restart just to get out of the locked up condition.
jbcalg.. I would agree with the "heat" possibility, except this does not happen on the non-custom courses in the game and on other custom courses.. just a few. As far as your question about SLI.. I must claim ignorance on what you are referring to. I am somewhat PC literate, but not sure about that term.
Thanks for the input so far, I hope that I can discover what is causing this. |

| To start with, not all customs are deisnged to always run on the minimum specifications. I personally did Bandon Dunes and I would not be surprised to see that wear hard on your older video card and only 1 Gigabyte of RAM. You may need to turn down the settings on the graphics options on some of these custom courses. The shot type and hole type bug is more prevalent on custom courses. You will need to do this for every single player you play with. I would first try one of the aforementioned courses you are having problems with using your own personal player on its own after you have made both files read only |

OK, this is pretty weird, but here are my findings. Since I am an engineer by trade (;Voice Communications) when researching problems, I was trained to change only one thing at a time. That way if you can cause a failure, or a fix, you know where the issue is. If you change more than one, you dont know which caused the failure or fix. So I undertook some analysis to see if I could arive at a cause. Not a root cause, but where the symptoms are prevelant.
Set Up: I played 8 rounds on the front 9 of Quail Hollow. (;This has been the course where I have consistently had the lock up problem. In those 8 rounds, the course was set to Very Dry, Breezy, Pro Tees, and Difficult Pin. (;Just kept them the same avoid any changes that might cause the problem and it is the set up when I encountered the issue previously.)
1. First Round: My profile only. Results: Flawless 9 holes. 2. Second Round: My profile and Ian Poulter (;Pre-rendered player in the game.) Results: Flawless 9 holes. 3. Third Round: My profile, Ian Poulter, Colin Montgomerie (;Both pre-rendered in the game.) Results: Flawless 9 holes. 4. Fourth Round: My profile & Fred Couples (;Custom player from Course Downloads Utilities.) Results: Flawless 9 holes. 5. Fifth Round: My profile, Fred Couples, & KJ Choi (;Custom players from website.) Results: SYSTEM LOCK UP BETWEEN HOLES 2 AND 3 WHEN ATTEMPTING TO POST SCORES. 6. Sixth Round: My profile and KJ Choi (;Same custom player as before.) Results: Flawless 9 holes. 7. Seventh Round: My profile, KJ Choi, and Phil Mikelson (;Also from Utilities on website.) Results: Flawless 9 holes. 8. Eighth Round: My profile, KJ Choi, and Fred Couples Results: SYSTEM LOCK UP BETWEEN HOLES 4 AND 5 WHEN ATTEMPTING TO POST SCORES.
CONCLUSION: Fred and KJ just plain dont like each other. Actually, I am not sure what causes the error, and am just as sure that there are others here that have played KJ Choi and Fred Couples on a custom course without incident. My guess is that there is some process, not sure which, that is causing my CPU to heat up more than normal when these two are played. That would account for the failure being on differnt holes and with the same two players. I am aware, that this game does raise the cpu temperature because when launching it, it does start up a secondary cooling fan that is mounted just above the two pentium chips. And it shuts down after closing the game and a short period of cooling. So, I guess that I will just keep KJ and Fred separate and continue to enjoy the game.
Thanks again for all of the input, and thanks to Gunpower61, jbcalg, and jmeier for your help. |

BINGO BANGO BONGO ----PROBLEM FULLY RESOLVED!!!!!!! Sometimes the most perplexing problems are solved with the easiest of answers. Since I have my PC sent on automatic updates, I thought (incorrectly) so, that updates would be pushed to me when they become available. This, I thought, included hardware updates since there is a section for them. I decided to check the NVIDIA website and lo and behold, on April 2nd of this year, they released a new set of drivers for my GeForce 6800 card.
Since downloading the new drivers, I am able to play every course that I have tested. I stuck with the PGAX courses because I had lock ups on those course before. (I am not making any comment against PGAX courses. They are amongst the finest courses on this site.) I just knew that I had something that just wasn't right on my PC. Immediately, I noticed subtle changes in colors, textures, and the secondary cooling fan has not run at any point. I just completed testing on 3 courses with both KJ Choi, and Fred Couples playing and not a single lock up or anything but flawless play.
Reminds me of a saying: "Beware of things that fix themselves, they can also break themselves." |

automatic updates is a windows thing, only provides MS updates and 'some' driver updates when you go to the update site directly
video card drivers - better to look for yourself occasionally both ati and nvidia update monthly your choice whether to update Video drivers that often check the Change file to see what they 'fixed'

| Thanks JB, yeah, I should have thought about the drivers earlier. It just didn't occur to me until I had some time to think about it. Then it was one of those.."well duh" moments. I knew that my PC was powerful enough to handle the files, but just couldn't nail down the cause. And funny thing, if I had checked earlier, I might have missed the update.. NVIDIA didn't put in on their website until April 2nd. |

| I recently had to buy a new video card (had nvidia, now have ati) and after reinstalling tw08 I removed both folders from the confindence folder to repair the bug. I recently started to experience slow gameplay again, so I went to check and to my amazement neither folder had regenerated as it was supposed to. So now my game is still slow but I hawve no way to fix it? Could it be my new videocard? |

Hi Jimi...
You removed the old nvidia display driver before you installed the new ATI card driver ? Be carefull: only remove the Nvidia Display driver, it is possible you have other required nvidia components installed. When you go to Software Add/remove software you should see: Nvidia drivers Inside Nvidia drivers select to remove: Nvidia display driver |

| Pat, the only nvidia component I had still installed was my PS plugin folder. I removed that and I´ll see what gives. |
