Hello, bought the game as I've got a new laptop for the first time in years and saw it in the bargain bin. It's the first installment I got since 2003 so I thought I'd give it a try.
I realise from reading countless posts that you cannot edit the season, which for me is a huge negative as I spent many a happy hour trying to qualify for the Masters at Augusta (amongst other tourneys) on my old disc.
I'm not naive enough to think I can come up with a solution that will be smarter than almost two years of this whole community trying, but I was wondering if my following idea had any way of working?
Instead of editing the whole season, is there a way to use the current season schedule, but fool the game into loading the wrong course?
ie: At the start of the season, it thinks it's loading the Blue Monster, but instead the files have all been renamed and it's actually loading a custom course... even if the dates and tourney name and all other info is still the same?
I've been involved in amateurishly modding all sorts of EA Sports games for years and got the idea from a workaround for MVP Baseball 2004 where all the playoff games were scheduled in the day, so to play a night game you had to rename the day stadium file into night to fool the game into loading it.
I've tried the obvious ways of doing this for TW08 (renamed all the Poppy Hills (eg) files into their equivalent for cog hill, then opened the game and tried to play a course on Cog Hill and it gets to various stages of the load screen % before it just halts and goes no further)
I've also tried using the TW Caddie to make the game search for a different file when loading the course and flags and all that jazz... but it doesn't seem to like that and I'm sure it wasn't designed for such tinkering...
Long story short, it might not be completely original, and I'm sorry if this is a waste of time, but does anyone with greater knowledge of how the game uses and loads it's course files have a way to make my half an idea work?
I'd be more than happy not editing the whole season, simple changing a small handful of courses within it. And I could live with the tournament being called the BMW International and having BMW flags as long as the course itself is Augusta or wherever.
Thanks |

| THE only way to do this would be to use a HEX Editor to edit the GUID of the course and then edit the registry to point to the new file. Should work, but never tried it. |

Thanks for responding TruBlu... for a second I assumed my idea would just fade away into forum obscurity
The fact you say this 'should work' makes me optimistic. I've heard of the HEX editor but haven't ever tried it, and god knows what a GUID is.
Would you (or anyone else?) be able to try and see if this actually works?
Or is changing the registry so much hassle that it isn't worth it even if it does work?
I assume for a lot of people this wouldn't be a viable solution because by changing all their connecting wires between the game and the courses they end up shooting themselves in the foot when they want to play a course online or load it elsewhere... but I don't play online... if I can set up a PGA Tour season with some custom courses thrown in, that'll keep me happy. |

Sorry, but doing something like this is something you are going to undertake on your own. Hacking the registry or hex editing files to change their GUIDs would be a tricky undertaking and could mess up your files and/or your operating system if done wrong. As a staff members I do not want to take responsibility for doing something like that and possibly screwing up someone elses system.
TW08 didnt come with a Career Editor. No one in the community has found a way to work around this. Unfortunately, that is what we have to live with and can only hope that TW10 will correct this. |

Ok... well, I understand there are risks and can therefore appreciate you wouldn't want to go posting anything that could be taken as 'advice' that then screws up someone's PC
If anyone is confident enough to try this then let me know... otherwise, if someone who knows about it wants to PM me some info then I might be willing to give it a try, just for curiousity sake...
just out of interest, what's the worst case scenario? Could it really mess up my whole Windows settings or would a mistake just mean reinstalling the game from scratch?
I can live with the latter :P |

I think all the stock 08 courses may have a unique identifier over and above the GUID (;Course internal name) as i tried to recompile one of my custom courses giving it an internal GUID of Doral and renaming the file to dor.tcr and then overwriting the stock course.
The game just hung when trying to load the PGA tour. |
