Looking for J. Jarvis.
Was recommended that I talk to you concerning this issue.
I have DSL connection that goes to my desktop and also wireless router. I play TW 2008 online with my laptop(much better than my desktop) that uses the wireless connection. The problem is, when my landline phone rings, my wireless internet disconnects from laptop. Any thoughts on how to remedy this without buying any or very little new gear (college student right now)? It was recommended to hook my laptop through my desktop for internet with ethernet cable...any other ways?
Thank you.

If you are dropping connection when the phone rings it is either a lack of dsl filters installed on the telephones or interference from a cordless telephone.

I would agree that if you are getting drops when the phone rings that it is probably an issue with not having filters on your other phone lines in the house or the filters are not working properly.

And if that doesn't work, look into the mega hertz for your phone, may not be enough?

I had problems with wireless too. An IT guy (;ubergeek) recommended ditching all 4.1Ghz phones and getting a DECT phone. I picked up a Uniden DECT 3 phone set at Sams Club which is awesome and not too expensive (;$79);; problem solved. Evidently 4.1 gHz cordless phone interference is a well documented interference. Mt latest wirless card that I got had it in bold print in the quick-install guide, even. We all love an excuse to upgrade, nows your chance!

Yes cordless phones(not cellular) are well known culprits to interfere with wireless G computer networks. Wireless G operates on 2.4ghz same frequency as most cordless phones. You can try changing channels on the wireless network to see if that improves. But lack of filters are still usually what causes disconnects when the phone rings. Your dsl provider should provide filters that connect in between each telephone jack and the telephone. You need to have one of these on each phone outlet that you have a telephone hooked up to.

Thank you for the replies. For now, I am just disconnecting the phone cord from the transmitter...kind of a cheesy way to operate, but works. I will most likely ditch the current phone and go with the recommended phone.
Thank again. |
