With the release next month of the retail version of CPG 2009 ALL owners of CPG2 are to recieve their free upgrade, (as promised), to the newer version as of NOW. Please see the note from Rich below...
Dave.
-------------------------------------
Dear All,
We have made the 'public beta' version of CustomPlay Golf 2009 available to all users that own CustomPlay Golf 2. You should find it in your Games list in CustomPortal. The game is approximately 200MB to download. This does not include any courses. Courses are now stored separately and can be downloaded via the 'Courses Tab'. Since you already have CustomPlay Golf 2 - you do not want to re-download large files that you already have, therefore please follow these instructions to avoid unnecessary downloading:
By default the courses folder is set to be in your CustomPortal data folder which is in:
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\CustomPortal
Windows Vista: C:\ProgramData\CustomPortal
Courses will be stored in sub-directories of the courses folder as follows:
Crazy Golf Mini P&P Par3 Ranges
To avoid re-downloading courses for Golf2009, we recommend you copy the contents of your CPGolf2 courses folder into the Golf folder. Don't worry if you are not sure if you have the latest version - CustomPortal will check and let you know if that's the case.
We hope you'll agree that this approach to handling courses is much more user-friendly due to the large sizes of the files.
You can change the location of the courses folder via the File -> Settings dialog, under the "Folders" tab.
Please leave any and all feedback here and if you have any questions then please do not hesitate to ask them.
Please note - you can also copy your player files from CPGolf2 into CPGolf2009. Go to the CPGolf2's System folder and in there is a players directory, just copy the files from in there to the equivalent folder in CPGolf2009.
By default that would mean copying:
Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\CustomPortal\Games\CPGolf2\System\Players
to
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\CustomPortal\Games\CPGolf2009\System\Players
Windows Vista:
C:\ProgramData\CustomPortal\Games\CPGolf2\System\P layers
to
C:\ProgramData\CustomPortal\Games\CPGolf2009\Syste m\Players
If you have changed the location of your games folder then the paths will differ.

Yep...VERY good PC Golf simulation. It does not yet have all the bells and whistles that TW has, but it is getting better by the month as the Dev Team continues to pump out updated features and courses for the game. |

| I have it as well. Very solid game and getting better all the time. In my opinion the best ball physics of any game out there. While I play TW and Links I'm slowly beginning to play Custom Play the most often. Can't imagine enjoying PC golf and not having all three. It's not necessary to only play one, at the exclusion of the others. They all have something different to offer. The best thing about Custom Play Golf 2009 is that they are continually upgrading the product. Monthly updates are made each and every month along with additional courses periodically. |

A really nice new course, Stad Groningen Golf Links, by Desert Rat has been released and is available from the 'Live' site. It is the 2nd course released with the new course overlay included and it also has some superb custom animations.

If you have the public beta version of CPGolf2009 installed, then the next time you start CustomPortal it will be updated. The following changes have been made:
* Made the tree detail level for trees on and around the current hole constant * Optimised billboard tree rendering * Added a "VSync" option in the Screen Settings dialog * Fixed a bug in the tree LOD code that caused corruption in tree trunks (as seen with "Live Oak") * Fixed the effect of wind on leaves * Fixed bug causing hole pars to be calculated incorrectly (when courses are on "high ground") * Increased the min and max height range to -1024m -> +1024m

| It is pretty to look at if you like postcard-like still images. If Links 2003 had ANY dynamic 3D rendering of its environment, it would be much more appealing to many of us who prefer Tiger or CPG 2009..... |

| Even the Demo of CPG2 does not do the game justice as it did not see any of the development improvements that were made over the life of CPG2 nor any of the new things that are going to be in CPG2009. It will tax an average PC fairly well, but you can get a balance of good playability and nice looking graphics by getting the settings adjusted properly for your machine. |

Last update of the year is available now...
[1] Reduced memory usage
This was achieved by only creating collision meshes for trees on and around the current hole. The drawback to this is there is a tiny delay when starting a new hole whilst the new collision meshes are allocated and the old ones destroyed.
[2] Grass Objects
The draw distance for grass objects is now tied to the "Grass Draw Distance" graphics option. At the maximum value, the draw distance for grass objects is 100m and at its minimum, it is 50m (despite the value appearing as 20 -> 90).
A note about planting your course...
Currently, the maximum number of SpeedTree objects that will be rendered as 3D on any single hole is (assuming MAX graphics settings):
50 High detail 200 Medium detail 1100 Low detail
Giving a total of 1350 3D trees. ALL other trees will be rendered as billboards.
(Note: On min graphics settings, a total of 360 trees will be rendered in 3D).
When planting your course you must take this into account. If you wish to plant lots of small SpeedTree objects (i.e. shrubs and plants) then you should use "Grass Objects".
Grass Objects
These are similar to normal placed objects with the following exceptions:
1. They have their own draw distance (now tied to the Grass Draw Distance slider). 2. They do NOT create collision meshes (i.e. the ball will not interact with them - they are purely aesthetic). 3. They do NOT cast shadows 4. They will NEVER be rendered as billboards

Im 100% positive its not Kens version and Im about 75% sure the graphics are set way to low, or the course is from a previous version of TW. |

| The augusta pic on the left is not a TIGER WOODS pc picture. As you can see in the picture, it is scaled and planted really nice. The terrain and landscape is also really well done. That is just from my eye. It is all about the details....I can even pick up sam torrance teeing off on the other pic......He He.... |

| The picture on the left is from the Mike Jones Rendition of Augusta National from Links 2003. None of the planting is really there it is all just @D imagery used on the game taken from the actual course itself. Links 2003 does not have 3D objects for planting. The one on the right is the PGAX Augusta |

Jimbo,
U have to kidding they can just copy the follage and dont have to hand plant it. I guess that is why it looked really good. Where do u get pictures of landscapes? I never owned links only saw the pics of the Mike Jones course. What kind of terrain program do they have to do the scaling of the course. Our is pretty much work and smooth...
I guess this suposed to be about custom play golf. My only comment is, I like using the tour players. If you could make a ton of the tour players with their real swings, add in tons of grandstands / galleries, tv towers, making it like real tournament golf. Put in the British Anouncers from the golf channel. Massive leaderboards. Yea I would love it...Kind of like British Open Championship golf.
Here is my 2 cents, sorry for the horrible grammer and typing.
I think a really good golf game should be a simulation of touranment golf. Yea it is kind of cool to go play pebble beach on the computer. But if you have a game that can do similations of the conditions of a real life tour event, than u have something. Something that makes u feel the pressure. Back 9 at Augusta. Having to par the last 3 holes in a US Open. A 4 hole playoff at the British. Even down to the final round were the leaders are partnered up to play against each other. So for example, I shoot -7 for 3 rounds and Tiger and Phil at -8. Well in the final round I am teeing up with Tiger and Phil. Vijay is in the group ahead, he birdies 2 and 3. The game than shows highlights of his birdies. You have the annoucers saying Vijay is now in the lead. Els just birdied 5 holes in a row...Tiger made double on 16 to drop 2 shots back. At the end Justin Rose and you are tied and go to a playoff. Now that is fun....
Jimbo this is an idea for PGAX, instead of having a leaderboard with SumoTheGiantKiller2623, make your players draft up a tour player to be for the season or use real names. It may add some more fun to your league. Part of the reason I never played online, cause I was playing against guys who looked like trolls, or had bags on their heads. Wizards Caps, looking like FB from Austin Powers, the whole 9 yards......The worst part, I always lost to these guys. |

You make 2D objects from tga files for plants and things in the APCD for Links. As far as 3D terrain goes, the APCD is best in class. CPG2/2009 is probally equally good if not better. I do not know it well enough yet but based on what I have seen, if it is not the equal to the APCD yet, it will be sooner than later. From a Tournament system, CPG is not developed that side of the game yet, nor custom swings/players/attributes etc.
For the PGAX tour, every player I have seen, is a very close resemblance to what we really look like. At least as good as we can get. All of the players I have played against online, look and dress like a tour golfer or serious recreational golfer. i can speak for a few of us in the tournaments that we do feel feel some pressure in competition. Cannot say if it is the equal to a tour, as I doubt it because of what is at stake for the pros, but it is pretty darn fun |
