I have played ALOT of custom courses and stock course over the last several years...and not ONE course that can I recall to that has any type of yardage markers. I have not seen any type of markers like you would on real courses. I know they use the sprinkler heads as yardage markers, but I have played on courses where they have a 3-4 foot stake that have been painted like a zebra (black and white stripes), at the 250, 200, 150, and 100 yard mark. Or I have seen a concrete type square block that has been dropped into the ground in the fairway. Usually a yellow block at the 250 yard mark, a blue block at 200 and a white block at 150 and a red block at 100. It's just an interesting observation that I have noticed that has not been used on any course up to this point.

I've never noticed them during a PGA Tour Event though... I think that's what most designers are aiming at replicating.

I believe one of the big reasons why such markers have not been used in the past is because objects in the middle of the fairway would pose an unfair hazard if a ball was directly behind them. Golfers would be forced to hit a sideways/backwards shot or risk deflecting off the stake object.

I placed white stakes 150 yards out from most of the greens on the Desert Wraith course because the stake objects were made with the newer object compiling method. The new method allows a golf ball to pass-thru the sides of an object (bad when you make a clubhouse or wall, but great for stakes) I included blue, white, and red stakes in the structure library so designers can hopefully use these in the future without fear of unfair situations.

What about just using the square shaped blocks that are mounted into the fairway? I have played on alot of public and semi-private courses that have these types of yardage markers. They are flush or just below the surface of the fairway, and are colored according to their respective yardage.
