speed up your PC if it were not performing like you think it should? What would be an appropriate tune up to do to a PC, for a better gaming experience? I am maxing out my RAM this week, to 4GB. That is a start...just looking for any other suggestions. Thanks.

... unless you have a 64-bit CPU and a 64-bit version of Windows, youre likely wasting time & money installing 4 GIG of RAM - your rig wont recognize it or use it ... youll probably max out at 3 GIG ...

I havent ventured into spending a tremendous amount of money on a gaming PC yet. I use my PC about 75% for personal business and financing. I have a Dell Dimension 4600, its about 4 years old. Performs really well, the game plays really great, but I thought I would ask and see if there is any other kind of tune ups or upgrades I could do to my existing system, before I go and spend 3K on a gaming PC. I have a Nvidia 7300 GT 512MB graphics card.

Hi, I have the same computer and I run TW 08 on Vista and it runs like a champ. The 2 thinks I do to make it run smooth, are cut down on back round programs running check out the Black viper web site and I overclock my video card (ATI X800XL AGP).Be careful if you do overclock your card! That being said I can run TW 08 customs full out.

Hardware upgrades options for a 4 year old PC may be scarce.
See if you can get an uprated processor, maybe hard to get now as your system is 4 years old.
As mentioned XP will only recognize about 3.24GB of 'usable' ram if you install 4GB. XP can only address a total of 4GB of total system memory ie +/- 2GB for the system kernel, +/- 1.5GB user memory and +/- 0.5GB for peripheral devices such as PCI, USB, Video etc.
If you lump in 4GB of physical ram you use up all of the address space just for the physical ram and the system would not be able to address the remaining system memory, hence with 4GB of ram installed the system will reserve what it needs at the top end of the physical ram for the peripheral devices and the remainder becomes redundant.
I use an ATI card with modded ATI drivers, you could try some modded Nvidia drivers, the gaming community are always tweaking the standard video drivers.
Check out... http://www.guru3d.com/ (download section) or check out your options to upgrade your video card.
Get a superfast hard drive and install your games on it. Keep your drives defragged at all times - i have an app. that defrags whenever my system is idle for a period of time. |
