I was a beta tester for 2005, and bailed after 2004 since IMO 2004 to that point was the best for hard-core golfers. The series began to look and act a little cartoony, so I bailed and have played 2004 sincea lot!
Put another way: If you could have just ONE copy of the series, which one would it be? I play online against a few friends via Direct IP primarily, plus a little solo play.
Id like to pick up the BEST of versions since 2004, for my collection, and to give it a chance again. Heres my criteria for the Best, no order intended:
1. Most realistic graphics 2. Basic game play should be at least as good as 2004, including a decent AUTO-CAM, physics and control similar to 2004, or better 3. BEST cadre of 3rd party and stock courses. I got a bunch for 2004, which are often huge in size. Why are the newer ones so small, file size wise? 4. More PGA players would be good.
Online play via direct TCP/IP is a MUST :o)
Anyway, please help me pick a final copy since I dont plan to get a console ever, unless they are just too good to ignore. I have a high end PC.
Many thanks for your opinions.
Noel

Hi Noel. I picked up TW 08 and TW 06 the other day for less than $13 combined. So no reason you cant pick up any version you want. After playing 08, I dont think I can go back to any other version. Its a beautiful game and plays great as well. 06 is good for the course creator and the ability to create custom tour seasons.
I have TW on the Xbox 360 as well, and while I have fun with it, theres no comparison as far as game play and user flexibility. The PC versions of the game are the only way to go if youre a long-time PC golfer. |

| Personally, I think 04 was the benchmark version. However, the overwhelming opinion seems to be that 08 is the best of versions. |

| I have only had the games since the 05 version. The graphics where slightly improved each year, but the playability (which was always good) seemed to stay about the same to me. I would have to go with the 08 game. |

TW04 has long been a favorite of mine (TW05 to a lesser extent) but I find myself playing TW08 more and more (and more) ... plus there are new courses added almost every day w/TW08 to keep the interest up. Any future community created bells and whistles will be for TW08 too and imho, the best add-on feature created for TW08 ... the TW Course Caddy! :-) So, TW08 it is. Its got all the stuff.
Just my opinion, Scott |

I only have 04, 05, 06. So I never played 07 nor 08. The reason why I didnt buy 07, 08, it was reputation on this site.
Being a fantasy courses fan, I think TW peaked at 05, and ended up at 06. 05 was superb at its color, and the fantasy courses were at their best. But I cant tolerate 05s tweaked [5key] action. 06s is straightforward. For this one point, I use 06.
Also 06 is very compatible, so, many of 03-06 courses are playabe on it. Only when Id like to play buggy 05 courses, I use 05.
I cant believe everyone on this thread saying 08 is the best. Perhaps, who dont like 08 already quit the game ? |

| If you didnt buy 2008 just because of its rep, youre doing yourself a disservice. I think graphics and playingwise its by far the best of the lot. Lots of fancy custom courses too. |

Goro, when you say I cant believe everyone on this thread saying 08 is the best< I can kind of understand what you mean...
I thought TW04 was *the* end-all TW version, even after buying TW05 back then. Then a few years went by and I finally said what the heck and spent the bucks for TW08 and have never looked back.
If you have a chance to demo it on your unit, give it a try. Dont sell TW08 short without trying it.
I and my family pretty much play TW08 exclusively now (okay...we still play Links and GBC lol).

Thanks jimi, Sscott, for your kind words.
I know 08 is better than 06 in a graffic aspect. The only point I regret with 08 is, you cant play legendary courses like Eagle Ridge Golf Club. And with some severe limitations on CA, you cant design such courses for 08. Ive never seen a screenshot on 08, with a picturesque panorama like copper canyon, which I throbbed at first sight and decided to buy 05 in an instant.
Anyway, I will probably buy 08, hoping the same change of heart as Sscott happens to me. Thanks again.
P.S. Does [5key] act straightforward like 06 ? |

| Speaking as a designer I have to say that the limitations on the CA for the 08 version seem less than any other version Ive designed for. Mind you, I only started designing in 06. But I think that any course that has been done for 06 and earlier can be done for 08, and look a lot better too. |

Thanks, Jimi. So, why cant I see any big pano on 08 ? I thought that you cant use any big pano on 08, is it wrong? And if you could, answer me about [5key] action, please. |

| I can do panos, but it is a tedious job. There are lots of courses with a pano on them, but personally I am not always a fan of them, because the virtual pano distance is often lkess than the actual distance to the edge of the plot. This causes the pano to cut into the plot, which often looks a bit unrealistic. |

Thanks Jimi, I understand how consuming to make a pano.
Sorry to Noel. Ive lost the way. Now I confidently declare, the best version of TW series would be 06. Theres no big differences between 06 and 08, but 06 accepts all the legendary courses.
I may not buy 08, sorry Sscott. |

I have 06, 07 & 08.
I like the features (Careers Tours, Course designing, etc.) of 06, but the graphics cannot be beat in 08. 07 is so-so. Also, I think the distances in 06 are more realistic than in 08. I can hit 350+ yard drives in 08, but rarely top 280-290 in 06. That is more realistic of actual players. I had a power drive when I played real golf, and I was only able to get it out there to 330 tops. Most drives were 260-280.
I play 06 on my laptop, where when I play 08 on it, it slows down on me. 06 will run on machines with XP and probably ME editions.
George. |

| The limitation of 08 on your laptop is not related to the operating system. Its your graphics accelerator ( video card ) thats the problem. 08 is more graphically demanding than 06 or 07. |
