A couple of comments regarding The Olympic Club's Lakes Course which is without a doubt the most well known of the three courses that exist just south of San Francisco. I was lucky enough to get weekend passes for the 1987 US Open which of course was won by Scott Simpson. I have seen three custom renditions of this course. Two at this site for TW by different designers and one for Links 2001. Although the holes on all three renditions were fairly accurately depicted, the thing no one has ever been able to really capture is the true look and feel of this course. The main reason I think is due to the fact that neither the trees used in the designs as well as the grass textures trying to simulate the look of the actual course were not even in the ballpark. One of the main problems a designer is confronted with in trying to replicate the actual course is that there is not an abundant amount of pictorial information that one can draw upon in attempting a true rendition of this course. Another thing that has never really come accross in any previous rendition and it is the one thing that really makes this course a beast, because length is not an issue. It is the severity of the undulating fairways in conjuction with the smallish and treacherous greens. I am not sure that the proper textures and tree types exist in TW to do a suitable render.

I think all that really matters to anyone is that the course is laid out as close to possible as the real course is. Although it would be cool to have the exact tree placements and type of trees and the exact terrain as the real course for thoses that have actually played that course.

I've been looking at Baltustrol 05 or 06, it doesn't look that bad in 08. Swapped the textures out, with re-planting and some terrain improvements it could be ok. The only problem I've ever had with it. The real course has these massive trees, they are so big. The trees in the Tiger Woods game, somehow doesn't seem to match up for this course. The layout, bunkers and green shapes match up very nice. I'll look at a few other of the US Open courses and report back.......

Actually this post inspired me to re-vise a US Open course. Was looking at Baltustrol, but the concept I wanted to do was a firm and fast course. Baltustrol is really long and playing fast firm conditions didn’t really work well. So I pulled out an old file that would be a good firm and fast course. I played a William Flynn course earlier this year. On one of the par 5’s, I hit a sand wedge from the fairway it landed on the front of the green and rolled off the back. I really liked the idea of collection areas and fall-offs, and the concept of hitting shots pin high and having them roll off the backs of greens. This type of course makes you think your way around. Than you speed up the green to 12.5 on dry, than add in some hard breaking slopes to the greens. You than have a course, in which you will hit maybe at max a 5 iron in to a longer par 4, and you will have mostly 8 irons and wedges to the greens. Fairway's are going to be 21 yards to 27 yards wide, rough is going to be playable but spin control will be an issue. You play well, you will shoot a few under, but if you game is off, you will shoot over par. You have to play these courses on Brezzy to Strong Winds. Calm is to easy to control your ball.
