I just got off the phone with Jason at Torrey Pines. A very friendly gentleman in the Pro Shop. I asked him straight out what changes were being made to the course for the Open. He told me the following in detail:
#6 Par 5~~Will play as a par 4 for the Open. It plays 515 now and will remain to play 515, but at a par 4. No physical changes made to the hole.
#13 Par 5~~The NEW tee box, is 50-60 yards to the left of the current tee box. The hole now plays 542 yards, it will play 620 yards for the Open. He told me that they went out just the other day and lasered the carry over the hazard, it is a 247 yard carry to reach the FAIRWAY, not rough. It is an angled tee shot, meaning it will be very easy to miss this tee shot either long or short in the rough.
#16 par 3~~There has been a new tee added for 16. This par three will play between 193 yards and 225 yards during the Open.
****This is a pretty significant detail about #13, the par 5. I asked him how far the green was above the fairway for the 3rd shot on this par 5. He called that spot on the fairway The Hole. When you are hitting up to the green on this par 5, for your 3rd shot, you are 75 feet BELOW the green. He said you will not be able to see the pin if it is cut in the back for the tourney (which it will be). You would only be able to see the top of the flag, when its cut on the front. I thought these changes would be great public knowledge to anyone who decides to make another version of this course. |

This is going to be interesting for sure. When I played Torrey Pines in real life, I thought it was pretty easy. I found it kind of flat and the greens didn’t have US OPEN slopes to them. To me it was a really nice public track, but didn’t have definition to it like an Oakmont or a Wingfoot. Around the greens the terrain didn’t have any kind of major fall offs, dips, and everything kind of seemed eye level. There was 1 hole one the back that was kind of hard you drive down hill and than hit up hill to an elevated green. Their was also 1 hole on the front that was hard. Bethpage on the other hand was the hardest course I ever attempted to play, every hole was a major challenge.
Over the last couple years they have made it longer, 7,600 or something like that. At the same time Tiger grew up winning championships on this course, same with Mickelson. I have been saying for a while the winner will be double digits. Over the years the winning scores have been insane low. Even back in the 80ties they were shooting like 22 under.
For Tiger or Phil not to win this event will be an upset for sure…..
The interesting thing is going to be is how much more difficult is a US Open setup. How firm are the greens going to be. The Pins will need to be placed in the hardest spots possible The rough is going to have to be 8 inches deep every fairway will have to be narrowed to 25 yards or less to make this course hard. The greens will have to be rolling at a 13. Basically the USGA has to doctor up this course big time to make par the winning score. They already added like 700 yards to it…..If over par wins this, it will be amazing. It will basically say the USGA can turn any course in to a US Open course.
I say the winner will be -9 to –12 which would normally be -13 to -16. That is just guessing, the weather can for sure change that prediction.
Torrey Pines and the World JR....Some info to ponder....
In 1990 Tiger was 14 here is what he shot at Torrey Pines in the World Jr.
ELDRICK WOODS CYPRESS, CA USA 68 69 67 204
In 1991 Tiger was 15 here is what he shot he shot at Torrey Pines in the World Jr.
ELDRICK WOODS CYPRESS, CA USA 74 70 73 69 286
Past boys champions include Notah Begay III, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, Corey Pavin, Nick Price, Craig Stadler, David Toms and Tiger Woods. 1984 was a vintage year, with David Toms winning the 15–17 event, Ernest Els the 13–14s, and Eldrick Woods the 9–10s (despite still being age 8). |

| I would like to see the changes made to the existing Torrey Pines course, or a new course created with the changes, since this is what the US Open course will be like. |
