| I noticed the Irish Sands course is now version 2. I have read some of the comments that the original version had some lag on other members systems. Then a less demanding version was released, for systems of lesser grade. Ok, with that in mind, I want to ask the designers how do you determine, when creating a course, what level of system do you create the game for? Do you create your courses with just the bare minimum system requirements in mind, or do you create them with a more advanced user in mind, and so on? Just curious. Also, what would you all say is the AVERAGE system requirements for all the custom courses? I have heard that some of you guys have pretty suped up systems, with high end graphics cards, but still experience lag, and choppy play on some, not all, courses. Can anyone explain that? The reason I am asking, is I am upgrading to a different graphics card tomorrow, and installing an extra gig of memory. I just hope my upgrade will be enough to pull future well made courses, and other EA games. Thanks in advance! |

lets look at this problem, you are given a blank screen in a computer program, now your task is to create a golf course, their are no rule books or anything published by EAsports explaining how to work this program or how to build your course. Next there is not even an official installer program to load them in to 08 there is not even a compiler for 08 everyone is using 06. If you want to create textures you also have to use the 06 LC.
Ok, lets think logical on this, some courses work and run fine, correct, were others you may XP some lag. What causes lag or crashes? This is a loaded question, but the basic answer is, the less you use on your design, the more likely the course will work, the more stuff you add in to your course the more likely it will crash or have lag. You start adding in extra shapes, extra structures, more trees and bushes, more detail terrain, grass effects, extra rough lines, galleries, cls and sounds. Than if the designer doesnt understand how to optimize, you have more issues. The designer has to take all of this in, than decide what he or she wants to do on their course.
You the player leave the settings the same for each course, and dont adjust them of course specific courses are going to play different. Something like the Irish Sands course, well if you turn the grass effects off, you will xp NO LAG at all (it will take away from the graphics, maybe the answer for you is, having the grass set 2, low or medium). Sometimes the tree settings or cls have an effect.
I guess both the player and designer needs to find balance on what works. Please understand the designer has no idea what your specs are on your machine, they cant custom build courses for everyone. If you like the course you are playing and xp some issues with it, you can try to lower your settings, if that doesnt work just move on. It doesnt hurt getting a top of the line video card either. (YES WITH THAT YOU ARE GOING TO STILL HAVE TO ADJUST YOUR SETTINGS SOMETIMES)
I don’t think the designer wants to release courses that crashes all the time, because of my style, the courses that I released from 06 on, had more problems than anyone, if you didn’t adjust your settings, their were issues, I also wanted the courses to be a specific way, and would not change my style to accommodate others, the game has it limits. |

I concur with Hyno..
You just design your course the way you want, and of course, you would design it so you dont experience any lag on your machine, then it would be up to others to adjust...
Well said Hyno..

Yeah pretty much what has already been said. Designers typically have a specific idea in mind how they want to design their course. The more courses you make, the better idea you get of how to balance the line between looks and playability. Also, the more testers a designer has that have varying pc specs, the better chances the course will have less problems if the designer can make it acceptable to the testers. As hyno said, and I have many times as well: if players would take the time on a course they like to alter a few settings to make the course more playable, they would be a lot happier.
To add to that. 2 of my courses in 07 had crashing issues (I overplanted, my fault). However, I have a very low end system, and I could play the courses just fine, yet people with higher end systems had crashes. Seems strange doesnt it? The reason was I knew the limitations of my pc, so I had my settings turned way down or off, so they played. Others that had better systems but had everything turned up, so it crashed. If they would have turned their settings down, the crashes probably would have stopped. Im not blaming them for the problem, it was my fault, but it would help if people would try things before calling a course unplayable due to crashes. Now I just make sure I use many more testers so I can be more assured my courses are playable for the masses, plus I have learned what works and what doesnt. |
