Gang,

I have been an on-again, off-again participant to the TW community since 98 and have wondered why there has never been another program dedicated to golf course architecture? Over the years, I have seen many forums talking about wish lists and dreams of the next great release. Unfortunately, we have now come to the point that even EA Sports has decided against releasing a CA for their 07 program Very disapointing indeed.

Has there ever been serious discussions regarding a different platform? While I respect the fact that this is a huge undertaking from both a time and money standpoint, and to a very niche market, it seems interesting that there has never even been mention (to my knowledge) of a different program. Are there high-end solutions offered? ($100 plus in cost) Are there programs offered via download only?

I would be very interested to know if there are any pending discussions or future plans to release the next generation CA. (TW is very good but needs to be updated to include countless modifications per forums wish lists.)

Please respond if you know of any information.

Regards,

Hindsave

Yeah, Ive been wondering about the same thing. I remember the days before the TW course architect...

There was the Jack Nicklaus series, produced by Accolade (later by Activision), that had a CA program that got better with each subsequent release. Unfortunately, the series got dropped several years ago, and its technology has never been updated since. It used a system very similar to the one Tiger uses now (more on this in a minute), dropping shapes onto a landscape. It was great for cranking courses out in a hurry, but wasnt very precise.

Then there was the Links series, which utilized individual nodes to manipulate the grid. It was very precise and allowed you to do just about anything (tunnels, buildings, etc.), but it took FOREVER to build just one hole.

Running concurrently to both the JN and Links series was PGA Championship, which was a good blend between the accuracy of the Links engine and speed of the JN engine. This, for those of you that dont know, was the engine that Tiger used and still uses. Other than graphics upgrades, the core of the CA program has stayed the same. With each release, the tools never really improved, nor were there any really useful new tools added. Now it seems that EA has dumped CA altogether, so I think weve got to step up somehow and solve our own problems.

Its obvious that the guys at EA have had a more advanced version of CA for a while now, with some of the stock courses having past-verticle walls and whatnot. Is there any way we could get our hands on this? Is there any way we could get EA to release the code, so we could make it open source? Or, is there anybody among us with enough programming prowess to significantly improve the existing CA or develop a new one from scratch? Something must be done!

If a better CA could be made, there would probably be lots of people around here that would pay to have it. I sure would!

Links 2003 or 2001 use arnold palmer course design, this one is so much more complex than tigerwoods course architect, u can choose from literally 1000s of trees, there are about 200-300 different color textures, u can create blending, where u can have different roughs touching the bunkers, and having those lines leading from the tee to the fairway actually touch, u control every elevation point, it takes alot longer to create courses tho, but they look so much better than tiger woods, and links is so much more realistic

the average time some people spend makin a golf course is about 3-6 months,
arnold palmer course design is alot harder but if u can use and know how it is so much better than tiger woods course architect

look up microsoft links or links 2003

Far as I know EA dont even use a CA for course building, they use special plug-ins and Autodesk Maya.......
