Because of the MASSIVE CHANGES that the USGA has done to Oakmont, Hyno Designs has decided to revamp this course, to bring it up to date.

Things like #8 is now a 288 Yard Par 3 !!!

The Trees are ALL GONE !!
They also grew in some yellowish weed rough in spots
Oakmont is more like a Parkland Links course, way different than before.
1994 US Open will look nothing like 2007

The USGA wanted to get it back to the org form, like it was in the early 1900s.

The greens on this course, will be the fastest greens in the game, only a dry setting will one be able to use. They have massive slopes, and they will be quick. The 1st cut of rough will be playable, but the player will be not able to spin the ball.

Only after the US Open, will I be able to see the course 1st hand, right now, it is mix matching different information to put it together. The course will be released before the Open. The Oakmont, course that was done in the past was a direct screen copy of the Micro Soft Link Course, though I no longer have that game, the course it self is already mapped out.....

This should be a fun project to do, and I hope everyone can enjoy this one.....It will come out with another course from PA. We actually waited a long time to get this, but the US OPEN, will finally return to a Hugh Wilson Design....

update: Well after working on the course, than finally playing it, the new lighting just doesnt seem to work with these types of bunkers. Than with all the trees gone, their is a lot of wasted space. The course it self would needs massive surgery to be brought up to date.
The terrain work looks horribe, I mean really bad.....Than it needs to be really cleaned up with the shaping....

At this point, I do need to think it over, if it is worth re-shaping, & re-building this course....Maybe even wait until the US Open is over, to get a better idea of what the course looks like. ....

Merion, does look ok in 07, it has a nice feel, the new lighting kills some of the bunker looks, but the course is pretty good. Right now, it is replanted, and may need to tweak a few things, before it comes out......

Sorry for posting about this course at this site. After I played the old one, I just looked at it, and had zero confidence of doing the course right. 1st time in my career. It was the worst looking thing, that I have seen in a long time. Anyway after heavy thought, and inventing a new bunker method, than thinking up new ideas for a shaping method, Oakmont is going back in to the production line. I truly almost gave up on it. …..The 07 game is so different than before, man, it brings out the flaws in the old courses. As you go with designing, you are always finding new ways to do things. I think the only reason I returned to this game, was to try to complete some of the work that was attempted before….With the Graphics in 07, I think it is possible to complete some of them....

Pictures were Removed cause it didnt link on the forum board..I guess u have to wait.......

The back 9 has been completed. Was able to overcome the issues of the past posts. Added a few extra Trees to the course, to just give it a look, rather than totally open fields. One of things in the past was I felt the old courses played way to easy. It didn’t have the game play level of a US Open Course. The greens have been speeded up to a speed which goes faster than the original Augusta 05 greens, which were removed cause they were 2 fast. What this does for those who like fast greens, it brings 3 putting more in to play. Plus you can bang in 20 footers from all over the place. It is pretty cool. U get above the hole, you are dead on some putts. It is a totally different feel to putting, and changes the concepts of the approach shots. Vry Dry setting the course will be unplayable no doubt. On Dry, I would say they look and feel like they are rolling about a 13 on the stemp.

Everything was done, to make the slopes in the greens fair. It is the most difficult thing to do in this game. Cause you are talking about massive undulations, and slopes. The kiss of death is, u putt up to the hole, and the ball keeps rolling back to you. (For Example the 18th green was changed 5 times before it was playable. 16 was changed about 4 times to make it playable. To explain it best, Oakmonts Greens are more sloped than Augusta and they are faster….

All those little ditches, which were missing before, have been added, they are being marked, and playing as Lateral Hazards.

from looking at the changes the USGA made to this course, with the added yardage and extra bunkers, all the little things they did. It seems to me, that Oakmont is going to be one hell of a test of golf. It is going to be really interesting to see how the modern masters of the game handle it. On paper it seems to be as difficult as Wingfoot, (the greens at Wingfoot are not even close to these) it looks if someone can shoot like 2 under, I think they have a great chance at winning. It depends on the weather, and the conditions, it is going to test everything a player has to play well. A 288 Yard par 3, A 234-Yard Par 3, Only 2 Par 5’s that are well over 600 yards. It is 2 much….not to mention deep rough, narrow fairways and lighting greens with massive slopes. Carnoustie is a harder golf course for sure, but Oakmont is different type of test all together.

This is just my opinion but perhaps you should leave the green settings as they are in the LC and not speed them up any. What Ive found over the years is not many people read the course notes before playing. Then, suddenly, they get in a game and freak out when shots go haywire compared to what they are used to.

I know the desired result of the design is to be as close to real as possible but when a designer starts playing God, so to speak, with someone elses game settings, it mostly backfires, causing people to come back and leave very negative comments.

As a player I know I wouldnt continue a game that had drastically altered speed settings, especially on the greens. With that in mind, as a designer, I would just leave the lc settings as they were and strongly urge players to use the v dry settings in order to get the most accurate real course conditions.

Once again this is just my opinion.

That is a very valid point. Over the seasons Vry Dry has just not worked, with the sloped greens, the ball seems to roll way to far. I only design for dry. Put that aside for a second. I hated this course at first, but now it is like magic with these greens. Every once in a while it is nice to play a course that is just lighting fast. Playing this course right now, to me brings back those days, when u have a 10 footer down the hill on slick as hell greens, and you are saying to yourself, I have to make this or else it is off the green. Or I just have to die the ball in to the hole or it will roll 10 feet passed. Honestly, I am not trying to get this super accurate, what I want is a simulation test of a US Open. Now you have to know the course, and position your shots away from flags or leave yourself in specific spots to make pars. If the pin in on a ledge, u can spin a wedge back 30 feet, so u have to know were to aim. The more you play the course the better you can understand, and work around the slopes. Right now, what I see on this course, the way it is set up, it is bringing out some advance course tactics that are needed to play these types of courses in real life. To me that is worth the weight in gold.

1st Round on the crap course, I shot 63, it was not working, now my best score on the back 9 so far has been 1-Under. It is hard but not impossible.

The comment would not bother me, but what would, if that half the players who play different skill levels, can’t even play it. Somehow, I have to do testing the problem is the LIB for the course is 16 megs, compressed to Rar. It is about 8 megs. So I can’t email it out. I can add 1 more green to the lib and make it standard, (aka My US OPEN standard Green Speed) so than I can release the lib, than email people the course. I think that would work. Than if the speed is 2 fast, swap out the green texture. The only reason I would do this is cause of playing on expert, one wrong move, and you are done……

Right now there is 8 pins on each green. That is a lot of different combos in the game. I stress their can’t be 1 pin, were u can’t complete the hole. One 12 or MAX on a hole wrecks the entire course.

You cant believe the changes and bunkers they added to the course it is completely different.

Here is Oakmonts quotes about some of the greens....I do remember Els making triple on 2 in the 94 playoff, and I can also recall the 10th green, being almost impossible to hold.

HOLE 1 (Which is now 482) and 5 bunkers added down the left
One of the hardest holes in golf, this long par 4 requires a blind mid-iron to a green that slopes away from you and will receive only the crispest of iron shots. Two putts and par here is a great start. (A GREEN THAT SLOPES FRONT TO BACK, GOING DOWN HILL, IS CRAZY OR JUST HARD)

HOLE 2
On this short par 4, a long iron off the teeing ground avoiding the ditch on the left and the bunkers on the right sets up a short iron to an infamous green. You must approach your putt from below the hole three putts are common from above it.

HOLE 9
This very difficult, blind, uphill driving hole has a severe ditch left and severe pot bunkers right. This pivotal hole, which plays as a par 5 for the members, will play as a long par 4 for the U.S. Open. The huge severely undulating green

HOLE 10
This par 4 features yet another downhill, narrow driving lane with severe fairway bunkers right and left. A short iron follows to a very difficult green that slopes from front right to back left. Four is a great score here. (THIS GREEN KIND OF REMINDS ME OF THE 7th AT SHINNECOCK, AND 3 AT AUGUSTA)

I got lost in the reply somewhere and couldnt tell if you were, or were not, going to alter the green speeds.

Of course the speed to Oakmonts Greens are going to be changed. It just depends how fast. It was done that way on the 06 course....

Well, we ran in to problems with Local 909, a Pittsburgh labor union, that was doing the reconstruction to the falling apart clubhouse. So we had to subcontract, the work to a private construction company. Now as it stands, Ben Roethlisberger needs a new addition to his house. So once that work is complete, construction can resume. The dates look like April to May.......

Here is where the course is at:

Because the way the structures are lighted in the game, I dot think this course even needs a club house, it doesn’t really matter, cause u cant see it anyway. So maybe I will just rig something together...

The red hazard stakes placed on the course for the ditches is not working they flash when the ball is in the air. The flashing gives one a headache, so all the hazard stakes will be removed. I will just write in the course notes, that the ditches are lateral hazards.

Not sure the reason, but on a lot of the holes the textures goes black. Maybe it is cause a lot of the holes are close together, and there is a tons of bunkers on the course, which have a lot of points in them. I have 2 textures that are the same for the main rough textures. When I replace the Blacken texture with the other texture, that is the same, it removes the black holes. It is a rigged fix, at the same time, I dont know how to get rid of them.

The textures for the course are just ok I had to build a custom set only cause they are used to set up the playability of the course. Aka, Rough in the ditches, which are hazards, 2 roughs to rid black textures, Green Speeds, and Rough Playability.

Now that the course is completely planted and put together, the frame rate is just ok, so I will need to change the density of the rough, to make it less dense, to improve frame rates.

A note to designers, I save the file, and opened it back up, and the entire course file was destroyed, luckily I had just saved a back up.

On carnoustie, I lost the file about 7 times, when changing the galleries. Messing with bad gallery data can destroy course files.

I am kind of getting tired of working on this course to be honest. 07 is really hard to design for. I can’t explain it, but these projects are just 2 much work…….I don’t really know if this course is good or not, it will be interesting to see some of the feedback…..A few of the holes, I really do like though….

Course is completed.....Yea, finally...Just testing the pins, which is not easy cause their are 8 on each green...So hopefully, this will be released soon. The course is a general picture of Oakmont, but a US OPEN simulation.

The course is pretty difficult, I am happy with that aspect of it. My belief is you dont want to do a US OPEN course that is a walkover. Maybe the 05 and 06 Oakmonts were walkovers, consider them PGA CHAMPIONSHIP releases. Cause this one is a US OPEN course.

At the same time you need to find a balance, to not make the course or courses unfair. I use advanced golfing tactics when building these courses. To try to test the player. On a Course like Oakmont or Merion, if you can shoot 4 or 5 under, on Brezzy, you have played a great round. On courses like these Par mean something....Un like the 22-under scores you see at St. Andrews for 1 round.....Of course I know their are players out their who will torch these courses......

On Oakmont, the USGA, by adding the yardage to just a few holes really added to the challenge of the course. Than I narrowed the fairways a tad, and reshaped the layout. Bringing the bunkers more in to play.....Add in the slopes in the greens, the tricky elevations, the 9 million bunkers, than the bloody speed of the greens, it adds up to nice test.....Above the pins is not fun......that is my only advise.........

Love it. greens are brutal if you are above the hole. the trick is to stay below the hole. lots of fun. your designs are fantastic. Ive always enjoyed them. glad youre back.
