I wonder if you can help me with this problem. I was designing in XP mode and the graphics was starting to struggle due to the number of objects being planted on my ambitious project. I currently have 1024 mb for both Virtual PC and XP mode applications. Because the graphics was starting to show signs of struggling, I closed down both systems in order to increase RAM to 2048mb. I have 16GB of RAM installed on the PC. When done I opened XP mode, it just wouldn't open, it hung forever. I went on the MS support forums and found that I needed to delete a file:
C:\users\Lawrence\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Virtual PC\Virtual Machines\Windows XP Mode.vsv
Having done that, When opening XP mode, the bar moved 30% to 50% then started again at 0% and repeated. It seemed to be going in a loop.
I went to my recylcle bin and restored the file to its original position. Now when I open XP mode I get the message to the effect "cannot enable the integration features - retry or continue". Retry has no effect. "Continue" opens virtual machine and I get this box which is frozen; I cannot go any further with it.
Do I need to re-install Virtual PC? If so, I will lose my work as no recent back-up was made? As I cannot access XP partition, I cannot see these files to do a back-up.
Any clues anyone as to a fix?

Hello Lawrence,
Not sure, but maybe you will find some help here:
http://supportingtech.blogspot.be/2013/03/win-7-xp-mode-integration-features.html
Also did you try to decrease RAM back to 1024mb ( i think you increased it to 2048 mb before ). When it is possible to start VM again, also try to delete the swap files in Course architect. |

Pat,
Thanks for the heads up. I tried everything. A really good friend of mine lead me to a support site which whilst helpful, it didn't solve the problem. I finally had to re-install XP mode which caused me to lose five weeks of work (that was the last time I had done a back-up to a removable HDD). On re-install of XP Mode I managed to increase RAM beyond the 1024mb with no problems. I am now thinking of getting a SSD to run my operating system and increasing my RAM to 32gb. Also, by using my HDD for the files, that will prevent future occurances of this nature. Problem is that losing 5 weeks of work, which was substantial, I will put this project on the back burner and carry with it in the future when my depression has gone away. :( |

doubt 32G vs 16G will make any difference - your PC and software isn''t using anything close to 16G as is, also you would need Win7 ultimate to utilize more than 16G
the issue is likely more related to the limitations of the CA software, and/or the stated complexity of the design you''re working on

It is also good idea to take a few back ups of your course architect file now and then. Take a copy of your course architect file now and then and put it on USB stick for example. You can rename the first back up: Coursename01.tca You can rename the second back up: Coursename02.tca etc....... This way you will have several backups.

JB, Perhaps another option is to have a dual boot system with XP on one drive and W7 on the other. That way perhaps I can increase the RAM significantly to cater for the problematic CA. |

Lawrence as JB said I do not think that RAM is the problem. My old XP PC only had 2gb of RAM but the CA worked just fine. |

An update to my fix for the problem. I was led to d/l Oracle VirtualBox which I have done and this is a far better solution than running XP mode in VM. For a start you can allocate as much RAM as you require, in this case I allocated 8GB and gave the partition 250GB of HDD from my 2TB HDD. When not in use VBox does not use any resource whatsoever, so W7 does not suffer. I have installed XP, TW06 and the CA. It is just like having a standalone PC, so I am back in business although I have lost 5 weeks of prior work on my project. No one to blame other than myself. I used to do regular backups but as my PC was working gr8 I got complacent. The beauty of VBox is you can set up daily backups which having done the initial backup of all files, subsequent ones will only back up new files since the last operation. Of course I can set that to backup to a flash drive.
Thanks for the assist guys, it was really appreciated.

Thanks for the update Lawrence, good news you got it working. Looks like that Virtualbox is very good. |
